Tornados

Post by Uncle Al »

So far no tornado damage in our immediate area. Our kids and grand kids are safe,
but they have car damage. Our town is on a bit of a 'hill' and the storms seem to
'split' and go either east and/or west of us.
The Electric Distribution Company - Oncor - has estimated 28,000+ homes are without
power in the DFW metro area.

So far, so good, Al. I was getting set to inquire about how things were going. The news footage is rather dramatic.

Hi Carl :)

What you saw on TV was the "Tip of the Iceberg".

There is a trucking company about 8-10 miles east of us where
the tornado picked up the semi-trailers, about 6-7 tons in weight,
and tossed them about like toothpicks. The live coverage I was
watching showed the formation of the 'twister' and ripped through
the trucking company. The trailers were flipping about like a toddler
throwing toys. Some were over 500-800 feet in the air and landed
1/4 to 3/4 of a mile away from the trucking company.

My daughter-in-law's car is practically totaled due hail damage.
The roof line is about 1/2 the height above the seats than what
it should be. All glass broken out. Glad the grandson's weren't
sitting in their car seats. They would've been covered in glass.

Just read on her facebook entry that her car has been totaled out by
the insurance company. My son's car will be repaired.

The 'best news' of the day is "0", Zip, Nada - fatalities :!:

Folks here are whinging about a half inch of wet snow last night, and most of that has gone...

Glad to learn that you've ducked the worst of the weather in your neck of the woods.

Have fun,

Ian.

THose are some hailstone dents!
As I'm somewhat north of milfmog, we've had about 3-4 inches of snow rather than 1/2 inch, but I'll draw the line at Tornados and golf-ball hailstones....

That's the footage that Sapphire and I saw. Calling it "dramatic" does not even begin to describe it. At one point, we counted at least three 53' trailers in the air simultaneously.

That no-one was killed was a blessing!

Sorry about the car damage. Hopefully that'll all get sorted out soon -- but getting that sorted is lots easier than getting people "repaired"!

SF: We in New England aren't out of the woods yet -- we could still get another big storm that could drop 6 to 8 inches on us, but the probability drops with each passing day, for which I am grateful.

On April 4th we had our first dusting of snow this whole Winter. Already as I sat into my steed to go to work at 08.00 this morning a quick wipe fore & aft did the windscreen & tailgate as the temp. was well above zero . I arrived with snow on the roof and bonnet, but it was gone in a couple of hours. However, the chill factor from a brisk Northerly makes walking out unpleasant.
Only last week we had an entire week or more of afternoon temps. in the low 20s Celsius, which for March was unusual, to say the least. As Milfmog says, we complain easily, but we have little to complain about.

Glad you're OK, Brother. That was one tremendous storm. Did your IOOF hall survive?

The lodge hall survived. It was not in the path of the twisters.

I never could understand people that complain incessantly about tornados in the area they've CHOSEN to live. I've lived in Hurricane country for 68 years, my families have lost and re-built our homes at least 10 times in that time. BUT I couldn't see myself living anywhere else. At least with Hurricanes you get a week or so of getting out or digging a hole time to prepare. With tornados tho, it seems to be a case of "Mommmm!!" what's that huge black cloud directly over our house doing?? At least in Hurricane country we know about the coming hurricane at least a week before it arrives...

Dramatic pictures Uncle Al! - Glad you're OK.

Not sure I like the idea of hail-rocks (not hailstones!) especially when you see the damage they cause - totally apart from the flying 18-wheelers...!
