Anyone been to Croatia?

Post by Charlie »

I'm going to Croatia soon for a holiday, and taking a stack of sarongs with me.
Up until now, I've made it a rule to enter a new country wearing trousers, and wear then until I get the feel of the country and its people - usually the transfer from airport to hotel is long enough - before losing the pants for the rest of the holiday.
I wore a sarong when we flew back from Malta last year, and it was sooo comfortable; I'm tempted to wear one on the flight out this year. I have two thing to consider: (1) the trouser rule I outlined above, and (2) it's so perishing cold in England at 5 am on a May morning :(
The hurdle is Croatian immigration; I don't want to be singled out and taken into a small room .....
Any thoughts guys?

You COULD....perhaps make a small "give-in" to the possibility of stone age customs in Croatia and put cargo shorts on "under" a sarong while still on the plane just in case something IS said by Croatian authorities, in which case you can explain you like sarongs but have pants underneath and if nothing is said then just slip the shorts off from under in the airport lavatory. Carry a carryon bag big enough to put the shorts in if everything is OK with Croatian security. Seems like a possible solution, whatta ya think? :)

My wife and I had a holiday on the Adriatic coast, based in Porec, in what is now Croatia, although when we were there twenty years ago it was still part of Yugoslavia. I'd hope its advanced a bit, because in those days it was very much like a third world country. The water supply was off, supposedly because the heavy rains had clogged the filters with mud, and we made day trips into Italy twice to get a wash. The hotel had fungus growing out of the walls. Veal with greasy lettuce for dinner every night. Some mornings a reasonable breakfast other mornings just a single sausage with a spot of mustard. The bus station had lots of wrecked buses lying around and there was no street lighting after dark. We went out to a dance in a neighbouring hotel one evening where I was jostled in the entrance way by some young foreign lads. I don't know what there problem was as I couldn't understand their language but I think they were just jealous because I had a woman with me. I didn't have a kilt with me nor did I see any men in kilts or skirts, but that was twenty years ago so its maybe skirt friendly nowadays. I'd go along with the sarong suggestion, with cargo shorts for back up.

Hallo,
I've been in Croatia last year, very friendly people there. No problems with any kind skirt, but I've worn my long black menintime skirt only in the late evening for walking at the beach and having one or two  beer. No problem at all. But don't play the rich tourist, always remember people there earn only 300- tpo 400 €a month. Always ask about there country, try to learn some words and sentences in croatian language and use it. People are happy if you give respect to them if you know what I mean.
I will be there in sommerholyday again this year, in the near of Zadar as my son likes scuba diving and it is a very good area for it.
Nowadays it is a start up country, you can buy everything you want. No problem with any kind of infrastrukture.
Only problems I've had have been with drunken tourists, :bomb: :bomb:

Have a nice time there
Günter

I was there in 2000 (Porec, on the Istrian peninsula), and wearing a sarong around the beach and swimming areas was no problem at all.

I can't vouch for wearing in towns etc,

Thanks everyone. Porec is where I'm going. Hopefully things have moved on in 6 years since Ray went there, so I'll push the boundary and see what happens. The objective is not to wear trousers for 2 weeks :)
