In Praise of Pencil Skirts

Post by sellek »

Why would you want to wear a pencil skirt? Restrictive and need to fit really well to work and look OK. Why would you want to bother? And yet I have some pencil skirts, 24'' to 31'' in length, and I love wearing them. The ones I have fit close around my waist and hips are not unduly restrictive with rear splits for easy walking, although you would not want to do much running in them! Why do I love wearing what seems a relatively impractical garment? Is it the close fitting? the neat trim look? the way a pencil skirt constantly reminds you that you are wearing a skirt? Possibly all of the above. Is it just me or do others find a particular delight in wearing a pencil skirt?

You might enjoy looking through Mark Bryan's, "My Skirts At Work", "Pics and Looks" thread.
There are quite a few pictures of him wearing pencil skirts.

I tried one before, fitted well enough and worked with my body proportions. Sitting down in pencil skirt is very comfortable but I disliked the way it felt while moving about so wasn't for me!

Your points are well made; and I mostly concur, but have discarded, given away, or ignored the few I have/had for the very reason you point out, for anything other than a limited event not demanding much freedom, they do seem confining. I tend to like full breezier skirts that are clearly skirts and move freely. The picture I posted today in "That Rare Male Compliment" comes about as close to a pencil that I do wear periodically -- that particular one is relatively straight but not "fitted" with a lot of stretch in the fabric giving ease of movement. With the bold color and shape, you still know you are wearing a skirt!

I get the delight of skirts that require some work to wear. To me it is part of the fun of skirts, that to wear them needs some knowledge and practise. Long skirts require managing, light skirts require care in wind, tight skirts require care when walking and many more. So much more fun than trousers!

I also have the same thing with shoes and boots. Heels look great, but again require practice to walk confidently in public.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

As you can see below, I've worn a pencil skirt (or a close equivalent) and found it to have been quite a fun experience. While not everyone can pull ff such a look, it's darn sure fun to wear!

I'm not as keen on pencil skirts. I do have a couple but they are exactly knee length and have a back split to make walking slightly easier though not completely free. The problem with true "pencil" (as opposed to straight) skirts is they are the most fitted to the female figure. The assumed target market. The only advantage is they take less adjustment sitting and are less likely to blow in the wind. I prefer pleated or flared to give full movement and drape when sitting. I certainly won't wear a mini pencil skirt again as they easily ride up and give a "view" sitting.

I tend to wear similar skirts. The closest I have to a pencil or straight skirt is a knee length Macabi.

There does seem to be some interest in tighter skirts among some members.

Most so-called pencil skirts these days aren't pencil as they don't taper in from the hips to the hem. They are in reality straight skirts and they are fine for anyone to wear. I find those which really are pencil skirts are designed to accentuate the female shape so I would avoid them as that's not a look i want. Also, I'm a "strictly male footwear" guy and pencils are really for heels.

I love them! They keep you snug in winter, are easy enough to walk in, best way to test them is to see how easy the thing is if you need to pull it up to pee. It should not be an ordeal. Ideally they are best worn at your tummy / navel, though some jeans skirts are of a cut that can be worn lower, like pants / trousers. I love the way some have incorporated the straight or pencil cut and worn it to work with a mens shirt. Mark and Alastair are masters at this, though they no longer post here. Many guys incorporate this look on Instgram and other platforms.

I like the restrictive fit, though you have to bear in mind any bulges with such a close fitting garment  pair with tights or stockings for the ideal fit 8)

The jeans ones are best for beginners
