In Praise of Pencil Skirts

Post by sellek »

Why would you want to wear a pencil skirt? Restrictive and need to fit really well to work and look OK. Why would you want to bother? And yet I have some pencil skirts, 24'' to 31'' in length, and I love wearing them. The ones I have fit close around my waist and hips are not unduly restrictive with rear splits for easy walking, although you would not want to do much running in them! Why do I love wearing what seems a relatively impractical garment? Is it the close fitting? the neat trim look? the way a pencil skirt constantly reminds you that you are wearing a skirt? Possibly all of the above. Is it just me or do others find a particular delight in wearing a pencil skirt?

You might enjoy looking through Mark Bryan's, "My Skirts At Work", "Pics and Looks" thread.
There are quite a few pictures of him wearing pencil skirts.

I tried one before, fitted well enough and worked with my body proportions. Sitting down in pencil skirt is very comfortable but I disliked the way it felt while moving about so wasn't for me!

Your points are well made; and I mostly concur, but have discarded, given away, or ignored the few I have/had for the very reason you point out, for anything other than a limited event not demanding much freedom, they do seem confining. I tend to like full breezier skirts that are clearly skirts and move freely. The picture I posted today in "That Rare Male Compliment" comes about as close to a pencil that I do wear periodically -- that particular one is relatively straight but not "fitted" with a lot of stretch in the fabric giving ease of movement. With the bold color and shape, you still know you are wearing a skirt!

I get the delight of skirts that require some work to wear. To me it is part of the fun of skirts, that to wear them needs some knowledge and practise. Long skirts require managing, light skirts require care in wind, tight skirts require care when walking and many more. So much more fun than trousers!

I also have the same thing with shoes and boots. Heels look great, but again require practice to walk confidently in public.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

As you can see below, I've worn a pencil skirt (or a close equivalent) and found it to have been quite a fun experience. While not everyone can pull ff such a look, it's darn sure fun to wear!
