Bubble/Puffball skirts?

Post by Mouse »

I remember a time in the 80s when Bubble/Puffball skirts were all the rage. Not that it mattered to me at the time, just another skirt type that wasn't in my wardrobe. However times have changed and with a bit of a revival taking place, bubble/puffball skirts are back. So what to do?

The classic bubble/puffball skirt is quite short and I was not sure I could make such a skirt work in my style, but then I found a long version.....

My skirt arrived from Amazon, costing me £12.99. Mrs Mouse required some bits for her cooking, so off I went to the local Tescos. The skirt has a silky lining on the inside which forms the bubble by being attached to the outside fabric at the hem. The bottom hem is elasticated, so a long step is total fine, you just feel the stretching hem on your ankles as you stride. In the picture I deliberately widened my stance to show the bubble as in normal hanging, the bubble is quite subtle. I am very happy with my bubble and the disappointed 1980s guy in me has been laid to rest.

So any other members remember Bubble/Puffball skirts. Am I crazy? Should I corral some confidence and get a short version? Am I just behind the bubble and every member already has a bubble in their wardrobe?

Those long bubble skirts look OK. I was always worried that the shorter ones reminded me of a nappy ............... that needed changing.

Hmm! Most curious. Admittedly, I don't recall seeing skirts like those back in the day, either that, or I just wasn't paying attention. Would I wear one myself? I have to say they don't interest me as the styling just doesn't attract me.

I love puff ball skirts. I was in Torquay Highstreet in 1984 aged 18 and was chatting to some girls. One girl was wearing a cream puff ball skirt with white tights. I didn't know who I fancied more, her or the skirt. Roll on 40 years and i bought this one from hobbs and wore it on a day out.

It was a bitter disappointment because the lining was so cheap. I would even say that most of my skirts have a slight puff ball air to them without being attached at the hem.

I am not the guy to turn to for "fashion" style or trends -- I really don't know boo about the brands, latest, '"in" or 'out' looks -- only what may appeal and that is quite a broad range over time. On any given day -- I still have elements of the "I don't have anything to wear" syndrome we so often accused our women folk of --- a close full of dresses and skirts, but "I don't have anything to wear" fell flat on our male ears so accustom to having our three standard pants there for all times! Now days, my own mantra has evolved a bit -- "I don't know what I want to wear, today" because the choice problem is in my head, not the limitations of the closet. HOWEVER, I concede I do not have a "bubble puff skirt" and did not realize they were an item -- yesteryear or today, though I vaguely recall such skirts that simply seemed to be old and worn enough that the fabric no longer fell smoothly -- and that, is still pretty my take from these pictures. I kind of like the one Mouse is wearing, but I tend to like midi full skirts, and given most of mine come from thrift shops -- the old not quite hanging like new is the default in my closet!

I am pleased to find another MIS with 80s puff ball memories. With fashion recycling various looks, the ones we remember from our youth can turn up today, just as puff ball skirts have done.

I like the spotted skirt, many of the shorter puff ball skirts available now are white, which tends to give as denimini put it
I was always worried that the shorter ones reminded me of a nappy ............... that needed changing.
the other colour widely available is black, but I have a lot of black already and I want colour!
