Given the subject matter, one might rightfully think it generally applicable to most of the folks here and, perhaps, many of those looking in!

The OP's (Original Poster's) thesis is an interesting one, and will of necessity contain many of the ideas and notions which have been batted around here in the community; what would be most interesting indeed would be to see the thought processes in action, how they're presented, and what a relative newcomer to the notion makes of them.

Whether we (those of us who wear things on our lower bodies other than trousers) realise it or not, we are participating in a very large experiment; some of us are trying to actively skew the results, some are just trying to get along, and some remain hidden behind closed doors never to be seen by the world at large. My main fear is that the enumeration above is from the very small in number to the very large, and I would very much like to see that ratio shift away from hiding.

Well the results ought to be of interest to regulars at SC, but that's not to say that every scrap of dialogue needs to be on the discussion boards.

My name is Katie & I am a third year student at Southampton Solent University. I am studying Fashion Journalism and am currently in the process of writing my dissertation. The title of my dissertation is Men in Skirts. I am writing about why there is discrimination against men in skirts and how we can stop this. It's not right that men should be discriminated for wearing what they want. Women can wear trousers, so why can't men wear skirts? I was wondering if any of you were willing to help me with my dissertation by doing an interview with me over email or over this site? Look forward to hearing from you soon!

Katie, it would be interesting to know why you have chosen this subject for your dissertation?

I'll also help if I can. I have a spinoff site called skirts4men.myfreeforum.org. The link to it is at the bottom of THIS page. A lot of the long time members of this site are also on my site. It's also open to anyone interested in promoting skirts/kilts/or any kind of 2 legs in 1 tube garments. A place to look if you've not already researched it is the South and Central Pacific and Indian Oceans. Fiji (sulu), Kingdom of Tonga (tupenu), the Maoris in Australia and New Zealand (lavalava), Hawaiian Islands = USA's 50th state and the traditional (Kain and Sarong, in Hawaii the sarong at waist to knee length is a men's garment and from shoulders to mid calf, a women's garment.) Sarongs are usually dark blues, reds, purples and black with printed tropical fish and/or flowers covering both garments. The Kain, a men's garment is usually a lighter colored garment with streaks of darker color (a common combo on a kain is bright yellow with dark orange streaks). This garment is very common in group dancing.

I've spent a lot of time in Hawaii and Tonga. I also was part of a movie shoot in Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands called "Deadly Fathoms" by the 2nd week of shooting all the men on the shoot had dropped their trousers and migrated into kains or sulu. Even tho they are a common garment there, they have no traditional "Marshall Islands" skirted garment. The Marshall Islands were named and populated right after WW2 when all the populace of the Bikini Atoll had to be moved permanently due to the A Bomb tests from 1946 to 1957 in Bikini Lagoon. Not knowing in 1946 how long the radiation would stay in the water and sand there, they were forcibly and permanently moved to other Marshallese Islands by the USA.

In 1958 the ground, sunken ships and lagoon was deemed safe for human habitation again and
US Navy personell moved in to help re-inhabit the island but all the former residents, having found property and lives on other islands, refused to move back and now live on Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands.

Our movie was to dive on all the ships blown up in the A bomb tests now that the lagoon was radiation clean. Several members of our Skirt Cafe have copies of Deadly Fathoms. If anyone wants to send me a DVD + or - disc NOT rewritable, I'll put a copy of the movie on it. :alien: 8) :alien:

Hi Katie.

I'm living in Sweden, if you like to get thoughts from another country, PM me.
I do a lot of documentaries as profession, don't know if that can help you in any way.

I'm quite new to wearing skirts.

Hello Everyone!!

Thank you all for your responses!!! I chose this subject for my dissertation as last year I attended a Yohji Yamamoto exhibition. His designs for men are created to completely diminish the idea that clothing should be linked to gender and he creates a lot of skirt type garments for men. One of his men's wear collections showed men only wearing skirts. This is what got me thinking about the whole subject matter and how it is really spoken about due to the 'Taboo' notion that seems to surround it. I have set up a survey and was wondering if any of you would be kind enough to complete it. Also if any of you have wives or girlfriends that are willing to speak to me, as someone on here mentioned that I should try and find out the perspective from the woman's point of view as well.
Here is the link to the survey, it is all anonymous. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LWHGPG5

Thank you all again!

Just noticed your survey - and completed it.

Hope it is helpful to you.

If you need further info, you can still send me a PM with specific questions.

Done.
I found it rather short, and was surprised you did not check whether the respondent ever wore skirts/kilts himself. I suppose that outside this small forum, the question need not be asked.

Thanks to all who have completed the survey so far. Yes it is rather a short survey, but I've found if it's a long one people loose interest and don't complete it unfortunately and also I set up the survey before finding this site and didn't realise I would get so many responses from you all, hence why there isn't a question asking if you wear a skirt yourself. Thank you all again for helping me out with this!
