An interesting discovery

Post by klaatu »

I have recently realized that I have a particular fondness for full length tiered skirts. I purchased a black one a couple of months ago and absolutely fell in love with it. When I go down the stairs it trails behind me dragging down the stairs as I go. I like to turn my head and watch it as it gently sweeps the steps. And I really like having to hold up the front as I walk up the stairs so that I don't trip over it.. To my way of thinking ... that is FUN.... Yes skirts can be fun to wear.
But that is not the discovery that I was talking about in the subject line. It is October and Hallowe'en is coming. Yesterday I decided to venture out (skirted of course) to my favourite clothing source Value Village. Being a bargain shop, they tend to bring in some more interesting stuff to suit the costume seekers. Well lo and behold, what did I find but a rack of tiered skirts of different colours and patterns. Well I took advantage of this opportunity and procured 3 tiered skirts to add to my rapidly expanding collection. One (the one I'm wearing now) is a beautiful royal blue, one in black and the other with a blue pattern in it which I am at a loss to describe. Its kind of a varigated thing. Well I would take a picture of it but the camera that I have wouldn't do it justice. I just gotta get a new camera. I took a pic of the one I'm wearing now but it has a red blotch in the middle of it and the colour is way off.
So I now own 4 tiered skirts and in that regard I am a happy camper (well skirter). And if you want something interesting and even fun to wear, drop by your nearest bargain shop before the end of the month and you might find something of value. Oh and speaking of value, these were new skirts, made in the USA and cost me like $5 each. Not only am I happy but so is my wallet :)

Indeed, tiered skirts (well, most skirts, anyway) can work very well for guys; in fact I have several which get extensive mileage during the summer months and two, which are heavier, are better for autumn and spring. You're right -- they're fun -- and when was the last time you heard anybody say that about trousers?

I certainly don't turn on the stairs to see any of mine dragging along behind me as I usually need to keep my eyes forward lest a cat get under me and cause me to fall over. When I'm wearing any of my longer looks I try to sweep them to keep the hem off the deck, but the other bits, like lifting when ascending stairs, are common to all long skirts and are motions that one just gets used to doing when wearing long things. Long skirts just feel great; when one is in motion the material very gracefully brushes the legs, and when standing still it's possible that the fabric won't be touching anything at all unless there's a breeze, and there's positively nothing like a brisk walk with a light tailwind.

Congratulations on the haul, Klaatu! I'm glad you're happy with it, because being happy is 90% of the game.

I have a cat who loves to catch the trailing hem of my skirts when I am going downstairs, he loves the ones with lace hems and grabs them everytime. He also likes to walk in and out of the longer skirts, I think he likes them more than I do!

B&B, your long skirts probably remind the (one cannot say "your" here as it's well known that whilst dogs may have "owners" cats have staff) cat of the ruffle along the underside of your couch but with the added treat that dad's legs are underneath!

I have 3 cats and none of them have bothered me so far. Well except to meander around my legs when I'm in the kitchen :)

As I understand it, a tiered skirt is made up of several bands of material thus creating the tiered effect. I have a long skirt that is not banded but an unstructured design called a broomstick skirt. It is 54 inches in length and just grazes the ground. It has a pattern of fish and sealife which I tried to dye to a solid color. I would like to find one in a solid earthtone color but that is not a common length. I even contacted the Mfg. and they no longer make one that long.

Have you thought about going to a tailor/seamstress and have one made from material you got at a yard goods store ?
A tailor/seamstress is not going to be cheaper than ready made and apparently unavailable but it will be sized to fit you
correctly and to the length you want and with your color; tartan; pattern.

WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

54 inches? Really? So are you exceptionally tall, or do you just wear it with the waistband under you armpits? :) (I'm 6'3" and 54 inches from the floor is nipple height on me).

I have seen very long skirts, but they were elasticated at the top and intended to be worn as strapless summer dresses. To be honest even those are unlikely to be quite that long.

Have fun,

Ian.

If memory serves, and it may not, I seem to recall Rick mentioning that he was a little bit on the short side which means that 53" as a typo yields 35" which might be about right. I'm 6'4', (76") and ankle length for me is about 44" with a 45" pretty much being floor-length.

I vote "typo". ;)

I quite agree on the subject of long skirts --- my first skirt was knee length, as a hot weather alternative to shorts, which I have always found more uncomfortable than trousers, so haven't owned for years. The difference was a revelation, so I thought about buying more. The idea of going long was out of curiosity, and I settled on a black jersey maxi, which I had to shorten to 35" (I am definitely on the short side at 5'5"), but which was so nice to wear that I ordered two more in a smaller size, and at 36" are ideal, grazing the floor in bare feet, and with plenty of striding room. They trail nicely down the stairs, and will even go up stairs without lifting or tripping. I don't have any animals in residence, so any stair hazards are limited to the hour or so after visits from grandchildren. (when I'm unlikely to be skirted anyway)
I have looked at tiered skirts, but close inspection reveal frills or bits of lace on hems and tiers, which I consider a bit "girly". I am now casting around for something with a bit more weight, with winter in mind, but equally comfortable to wear. I'm a firm believer in requiring clothes to be comfortable :!:
Regards to all

I wish I could find the picture I took about 10 years ago with me in my tiered skirt. It is a classic black "broomstick skirt" that I paired with a solid black Hawaiian style shirt with silver Chinese dragon embroidery on the front and my black cowboy boots. I then went shopping at the Natick Mall. It worked well enough the guy working the at the "Hot Topic" (a local goth/punk fashion store) stopped me specifically to compliment me on the look and talked to me about it for a couple of minutes.

It was something that received as good of a response as any time I've gone conservative and just worn the kilt.
