Dear Abby!
Re: Dear Abby!
The great thing about our bodies is they belong to us, and no one else. Every day, we get to attire and present our bodies as we choose. We all have out reasons for choosing an outfit on a given day. But one common reason --- and a goal I try to promote here at SkirtCafe --- is to find things to wear that embody our inner spirit and look attractive to us. When we look in the mirror, we say "yes, that is ME;" the inside is reflected and made visible on the outside.
I'm sure we all have our opinions about how others look in their chosen outfits. But we do not own others' bodies, we own only our own --- and that, only for our brief time here on earth. That is why we must make the most of our physical being, and we must not deprive others of the right of self-determination with their bodies. Therefore, I believe that most of the time it's best to keep our opinions about others' outfits to ourselves. I don't just mean on SkirtCafe, I mean in general. We need to create a safe environment for ourselves and others, one in which we can communicate to each other with our bodies and our fashions in ways we dare not or cannot in words. In doing so, we can move beyond the superficial to form relationships with depth.
As for who one would choose for a mate --- in my religious tradition, when we marry we vow to stick with each other for better or for worse, for rich or for poor, through sickness and through health, till death do we part. Anyone can feel romantic feelings while gazing across at a "perfect specimen" on a hot date. But marriage --- and the love that comes with it --- lasts a lifetime. Love is staying together through crippling mishap and disease. Love is sacrificing one's precious free time to provide something the other desperately needs NOW. Love is sacrifice.
