Petticoats
I made mention earlier of finding petticoats on ebay, well after a bit more research on there I found out something really worthwhile. Instead of typing "petticoats" and having to wade thru pages and pages of sales of books about petticoating and patterns on how to make petticoats, I noticed at the top of the list there was a link for "square dancing" WOW, no more books about how to make them but pages and pages of them for sale. All different colors too. Not just the vintage ones or wedding dress ones that are in the "petticoats" list but new modern ones of all lengths and colors, black, red, white, blue, mixtures of colors, extra large, about any kind you might like to try. I know that wearing a petticoat might be the straw that broke the line between what some think are exclusively "women's clothes" but hey, if women aren't wearing them, why not someone else wearing them? After all, they are just glorified slips, no? :whiteflag
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Petticoats and what I wore today.
Got a double-layer navy blue knee-length square dancing petticoat that surprisingly fits ok underneath a spartan UK. Definitely gives a different look, but is comfortable.
Anyway, to get the thread back on track:
Long sleeve teal green shirt with mock turtleneck collar
Black Survival Utilikilt with black pleated skirt, black slip, and black underwear under it
Three layers of socks,
bottom layer: navy blue sheer knee highs
middle layer: black & white stripe cotton knee socks that are long enough to have a turnover
outer layer: maroon cable-knit knee socks
Pair of brown hiking boots.
Temps were in the low-mid 40's with a light northerly wind. Pretty comfortable, but tomorrow, out comes a wool traditional and a pair of wool kilt hose in place of the cotton socks. Supposed to be below freezing most of the day.

Last night
Last night dashed out to to Blockbuster to rent some videos. I was wearing a near-ankle-length skirt with a tassled fringe at the hem. Dark green in color and of a coarse material.
The amusing bit is that when walking up the stairs to our apartment upon return, our daughter (18) was behind me and she said "Oh, that's funny Dad. That whole time that we were out I didn't realize you had a skirt on."
I guess it's becoming normal at least inside our house. Now if only it were so unremarkable at large.

Today...
Sunny and dry, but 30 deg F and windy (about 40 mph gusts). Outfit was: Black survival UK, two skirts, two slips, two pairs of sheer hosiery knee highs (one black, one white - gives a nice dove grey color with white leg bands), a pair of oatmeal kilt hose, hiking boots, long sleeve T-shirt, and a parka. Was comfy, but probably should've thrown on a traditional kilt, like I wore yesterday morning.

Been wearing skirts/kilts for the past couple of months on and off and getting more comfortable with them. Decided to wear an ankle length, black skirt with sweater in the office today. This is the first time in the office in a skirt. It will be interesting to see/hear what the reaction is. So far not much but I'm sure the word will travel.
Although many seem to find kilts more comfortable - I'm really more comfortable in a long loose skirt. I do a lot of reading and writing and the skirt is far more comfortable just to sit in. No pile of pleats under me and I don't have to think about whether I'm covered or not. I don't want to flash anyone. As far as the mental discomfort, I think once you've decided to be different - It doesn't matter between kilts and skirts.
Just my two cents worth.

Went shopping today in a pair of ladies jeans, which I bought from Gap a few weeks ago. Never had one single glance or any abuse whenever I am about and about with them. They fit so much better than men's jeans. I would not buy mens jeans again.
My true heart lies in wearing skirts because I love to feel the breeze around my legs. I am a 30+ year old man with a size 10/12 figure and slim legs that would look so much better in a akirt.
I have been walking about in a denim mini skirt (stops just above my knee so it is not a very short skirt) when darkness falls and there are only vehicles about and no people so nobody really notices anything different about what I am wearing. I do feel very paranoid at times and wonder whether some of the drivers actually notice that I have a skirt on since I walk the same route every day. I leave my work in a tracksuit with the skirt under it and when I eventually arrive at this particular road off comes the track suit and the skirt comes into full view. I wish I could stop being so paranoid and self-concious because I do not see I am doing anything wrong. I have no desire to be a woman, or look like one. I am simply a heterosexual male who wants to try out different fashion ideas without any undue comments or abuse. I have had none of this at the moment and I am sure my luck is going to run out some time.
Can anyone help me how to overcome my paranoia and be more confident in my skirt wearing. By the way I do have a proper full length kilt as well and want to have a go wearing it outside, but it is very big and have nowhere to change into it when I am walking home from work.
Kind Regards
Kilted Scouser

I am getting bloody sick of typing in messages only to have the screen jump about and the text dissappear!
Let's try again-
KiltedScouser,
Hi, Out of the 2 weddings I have been to wearing the kilt, one was in Gateacre in Liverpool. My cousin was getting married there and I had to go. As a scouser myself I had to go for it, but living in Scotland I have decided that if I am going formal it will be the full kilt outfit. So I did. Had a great time, the only effect the kilt had was to make me feel slightly superior. The full outfit looks far better than a suit and I felt that.
When going informal I have visited friends and gone on 'pubcrawls' while kilted in Southport and Sheffield. Both times I had no nasty comments, the only downside was the lack of pockets in the kilt. Now I have got meself a sporran that won't be a problem and I intend to use my kilt more.
As the kilt is 'official' male-wear I don't think there is any need to be apprehensive when wearing it anywhere. I don't use it at work for several reasons, but outside work only 3 stone of fat stops me wearing it more often.
Unfortunately I haven't got the courage to wander round in any other type of skirt in public, I could maybe push myself to a sarong as it's traditional male wear but I lack the confidence to wear skirts which aren't 'officially' male.
It's bloody silly but as I grew tall quickly at school and had a hard time, I have this pathetic need to conform to societies norms, well as far as what I wear anyway.
Sorry, got carried away there for a bit, best thing to do is stick the kilt on, go see your mates and go for a night out. You will discover that you are worrying about nothing. If you can be braver than me try doing it in a skirt, I think my mates might find that too much but your friends might be different.
Summary-
On with kilt, bite bullet, go drinking with friends, you WILL have good time. Stop worrying.

Get Kicked Out While Typing A Message?
Oh well, I think we all know this... used to upset me many times. No more, as I now type my posts offline, saving it all the time (have a temp.rtf lying around for just that purpose). Here with tom's it seems one gets kicked out when one switches to different browser window/tab -- I usually have an online dictionary page running. You still can use the back button to get back to your text window, copy & save it in a file, then log on again and submit your post... or do a mark all & copy right before you hit the preview or submit button -- then you still have your text in the clipboard in case you get logged off.Big and Bashful wrote:I am getting bloody sick of typing in messages only to have the screen jump about and the text dissappear!

What did *you* wear "out and about" today?
Ahem, not today but the other day I went to a party in my new thermo dress. This dress is killer -- windproof "plastic" fabric plus fleece lining, real warm winter stuff. The party was in a rather cold basement but I wasn't cold at all, even had to put off my jacket while the other guests were sort of freezing in their jeanswear...

Wear what you want to wear in broad daylight and stand tall. If you really believe you aren't doing anything wrong, this is what you should do. Don't skulk around in the darkness, because if you do get seen/caught, it will seem like you are doing something wrong, something that you have to hide.

frequent lurker, first time skirtsman
I know one thing about experience, none of us will ever be able to buy it...so the first person who could bottle it up and sell it would be very rich.
Anyway, a little background: I'm basically a young black fella from Wisconsin, lived in the city of Racine nearly all my life and unfortunately, I still live in the same house I grew up in with my mother and grandma. Mom initially freaked out when she found out I have a sewing machine, and apparently convinced herself that I don't know how to use it:sarcastic: (what do I look like, a goldfish? All I need is to draw up a blueprint, get the fabric and fire it up
)
Hence, I've been somewhat apprehensive about wearing a skirt outside of my room for a myriad of reasons, which probably sound familiar: Am I gonna get laughed at for something other than being fat, Is some Bible thumper gonna harrass me and beat me over the head with why "God" says I'm wrong to add skirts to my wardrobe, is somebody gonna look at me like I'm an alien?
What I've gleaned from the Cafe, IMMF, and many other sites has been real helpful, and today I decided to test the waters and see if what yall say about these fears was true. Turns out it is indeed all in my head...I'd left the house in jeans (the rest of my ensemble was a Milwaukee Bucks hat, a Michigan State jacket and sneakers. I did say I'm young
), but took the skirt with me to change into at some point. The first two stores I'd gone into didn't have sufficient restrooms, however, so I changed when I arrived at the mall. I figure I did get some odd looks, but the only one who said anything about it was a girl I know, who was working at a kiosk. we've been friends since high school, so it was basically good-natured ribbing, and I figure I had a pretty good answer when she asked why I was wearing the skirt: because I can
(oddly enough, she rarely wears anything other than pants-I can count on one hand the number of times i've seen her in a skirt or dress.)
other than that, the day was pretty much like many of my other outings...now I just have to find a time to gauge my mom's reaction. yeah, aughtta be real fun
