Re: Gendered Clothing Norms
I think you have to be careful as to what environment you place this
Even in the UK, your example woman can find herself in a very constricted life with just a slit to see the world through and no choice as to who she is married to.
In a very civilised environment, I think a woman can have a fabulous life on her terms, especially if she is pretty and smart.
For me the high heel shoe is the litmus test. In high heels you are both showing immense strength and power in a civilised environment where consent is totally respected. But total weakness if things go sideways and the rules are no longer respected.
Is it any wonder that most women run around in trainers and trousers these days.

Re: Gendered Clothing Norms
It was not my intention to bring women into this (although I clearly did). I speak of women's lives in terms of equailty they have achieved for themselves.
The sad reality is that men's fragile masculinity is like a toppling stileto. One small push and over we go. If only we (men) would let go and sink blissfully into something soft and comfortable, the world would be a happier place.
In the past i have tried to bring about participation in national skirts day but no takers. I still think if everyone wore skirts for one day a year it would have a big difference in how we see and treat each other.
Re: Gendered Clothing Norms
In my humble opinion a great idea, but to actually get people to play along/comply would be very difficult. It could be made to work in a boarding school situation, where everyone more-or-less does what they are told, but out in 'the wild', now that's another matter.

This may be true, but the reality of the matter is that a lot of people cling dearly to their practice of "othering" and are very resistant to any ideas that do away with their special status. So, If skirts and dresses were seen as an equalizing force of some kind, you can be sure there would be plenty of resistance. As a matter of fact, that's exactly the quandary we find ourselves in today in my opinion.Barleymower wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 5:28 pm

The offering was not intended as a "look at this happening now". Just this: therr are many people out there who want change. They can see that change in gendered clothing benefits men and women and simple things like a "skirt day" can go a long way to abolishing sexism.
Re: Gendered Clothing Norms
Well, we do have the (inter)national skirt day, 10th of March.
There was also a petition for a international equality day on April 14th to the UN a few years back, not sure what happened there though.
There is also the international non binary day, July 14th which is closely related.
There are probably other ones to that could be used to promote our cause. There are a number of accounts on social media that could help spread the word and if all of the rest of us also jumped on the train and posted a public picture with the right tags on the chosen date it will get attention(maybe not much but more than not doing anything).
Just like we have rock your socks for downs awareness it could be something silly like skirt for equality/fashion freedom/genderfluid clothing etc "its just fabric!"

Re: Gendered Clothing Norms
BM I have to admit I'm surprised to see that take place in Mexico, which always impressed me as a very, Macho , traditional, gender-defined, country. I traveled there fairly often before deciding to look elsewhere outside the US for a place to settle down in retirement. You could have knocked me over with a feather when they elected a female president. So I have to admit there are many things I fail to see because of my historical biases. Big things do often have small starts and I hope your optimism bears out.Barleymower wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:20 pmModoc, where there's a will there's a wayModoc wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:04 pmThis may be true, but the reality of the matter is that a lot of people cling dearly to their practice of "othering" and are very resistant to any ideas that do away with their special status.
