Skirt length - my experience
Re: Skirt length - my experience
I have 3 skirts between 14 and 15 inches in length and love them for walking. However, I do not wear them anywhere that I expect to have to sit in public. The first time I went out in one of the short ones to walk the dog I drove a couple of miles to somewhere suitable and within seconds of sitting in the car I realised that I could see my underwear. Trials soon established that this was simply a matter of geometry, not technique.
Further experimentation has established that 19" is the absolute minimum length I need to be able to sit without placing something in my lap to obscure views I'd rather others did not have.
Have fun,
Ian.

If you're like me, you tend to sit with legs spread, a product of naturally making ourselves comfortable with our endowed equipment. I had to observe women and make myself practice sitting with legs closed and feet drawn back, knees draped to one side or the other. I have to make myself conscious of my exposure, and that is a somewhat unnatural thought process for a fifty-something guy.

With the very short skirts, 14 to 16" range, knees together or apart makes little difference to the amount of underwear on display. Longer lengths become progressively more forgiving to "male style" seating.dillon wrote:If you're like me, you tend to sit with legs spread, a product of naturally making ourselves comfortable with our endowed equipment. Re: Skirt length - my experience
With a short skirt I either cross one leg over the other or if I'm in casual situation, like at home sat on the sofa then I tuck my legs underneath. Anyway women aren't bothered if they flash a little underwear so why should it be any different for me? I have skirts of all lengths and intend to wear them!
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

Re: Skirt length - my experience
I have two skirts that are soft, light, and have enough material in them to sag down in the middle between my legs if I set with knees spread. The mini requires more care than the knee-length one. When sitting with pants I always pulled the legs up a wee bit during the act of sitting. With skirted garments it seems a similar thing works as I "smooth out" my backside so I'm sitting on the bottom of the skirt with no captured slack which lets the excess material just sort of sag in the middle where it lacks support. If I then bring my knees together it looks like I'm wearing shorts, more or less.
Re: Skirt length - my experience
I think the excess material or any kind of pleat on a short skirt will help in prevent displaying your underwear. I sometimes think the mini kilt would be a good option if going to a public place, instead of a regular short skirt.

When sitting while wearing my skate skirt, as I sit I push material between my legs, that stops any unwanted displays

Very true - skirts whether pleated or flat have one layer of fabric while kilts have the double apron which tends to solve the exposure issue.tesjolts wrote:I think the excess material or any kind of pleat on a short skirt will help in prevent displaying your underwear. Of course wearing a sporran would take care of this but sporrans are worn traditionally with a full knee length kilt and not mini-kilts.
Still yet the weight of the double apron with just a nudge of help with a hand pressing down the middle solves that problem.

The issue is in essence that the female pelvic region is a bit wider than the male. The material has an easier time folding between the legs.
With the men the pelvic is narrower and needs assist to push the material down between the legs.
A bit of an awkward display when swooshing the pleated back side while pressing the front side down between the legs - my what have we here ?
But with practice (perfect practice) it very shortly (pun intended) becomes common place - sitting behind a table is great - a seat in a chair out in the
open presents other problems but then a chair in the open is a rather rare.
Yes melsav I too like/love my skate skirts - 16-17 inch length - elastic pull-on waist - and a fairly free flowing "A" frame hem line.
Cool and airy but caution when bending over (squatting preferred) and as you have noted about sitting down and careful on windy days !
I got a few at a USA department store (Charlotte Russe - LINK: http://www.charlotterussse.com ) they call them 'Scuba Skirts' - some are of plain
design others have box pleats wide range of sizes easily fitting adults with up to 40 inch waists from $10 on sale to $35.
Black and Navy Blue are the colors of a conservative look - watch out with the whites and pastels the sheerness can be revealing !
tesjolts I concur that a mini-kilt is better than a regular short skirt - but cavet a mini-kilt is worn rather rigidly about the waist and when
bending over or sitting the back side tends to ride up revealing some degree of cheeky (bum) crease if not careful. A chair with a solid back structure
is preferred over a folding picnic type chair. I know I have several 'SportKilt' minis and to save matters I always wear dark blue or black undergear.
It works for me although I do get a finger wave from relatives at family events. Tough skin ignore them or don't wear kilts or skirts !
In the winter months wearing tights or pantyhose eliminates all the exposure problems both cold weather and physical.
Now with our few days of summer just a little care is necessary to keep the legal peace and ones cool comfort.
"Skirt-Kilt-On" your preference !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Re: Skirt length - my experience
While the flat front of a kilt and the swinging pleats at the back look good, it would certainly make sense to wear the thing the other way round -- which is just what most neophytes do when first trying a kilt. Pleats at the back are a nuisance when sitting, whereas in front they would fall into place between the thighs.
A long time ago, I used the cloth from the lower legs of pair of trousers to form a deep box pleat just below the fly when I turned said trousers into a short skirt. My sewing was not expert, but otherwise this has always been the most comfortable and least revealing of any skirt I have worn. I remember having a picnic sitting on the ground with this skirt and thinking I was by far the most appropriately dressed of all the party.

One side effect of the pleats on a trad. kilt is the thickness of cloth you end up sitting on, it is almost like having your own attached cushion, great for sitting on hard or uneven surfaces, if you manage to get the thing smoothish underneath you. A proper woollen kilt also doesn't crease easily. Being honest though, my kilts are heavy, need the sweeping when sitting manouvre and were expensive. I hardly ever wear them now, skirts are much more practical and as I like long skirts, there is no problem with having to do the knees together thing.

Re: Skirt length - my experience
I would call that the "nutcracker" position; it doesn't work for me. My pelvis is not broad enough for a thigh gap, and not only does close crossing of my legs discomfort my hip joints, it is simply too much squeezing on the family jewels. Wish I could sit that way. My oldest brother can, but he has a wide pelvis. I inherited my father's narrower pelvis and he also had thighs spread when sitting with one leg crossed over the other.Sinned wrote:With a short skirt I either cross one leg over the other ...

Pleats in front is the way my cargo skirt, which I use for hiking, is constructed. The box pleats start six or eight inches below the waistband leaving room for a couple of button through pockets above. Hence the name cargo skirt. With a back zipper and button waistband, a knowledgeable person wouldn't confuse it for a kilt.couyalair wrote:While the flat front of a kilt and the swinging pleats at the back look good, it would certainly make sense to wear the thing the other way round

Although I prefer knee length I have some mini skirts and some others that almost touch the floor.
