I hate to be a wet blanket but, there was one big drawback to behaving like that nearly a century ago.

He is illustrated up on the bulwark on the no-mans-land side of a trench, where his rifle-toting fellow soldiers are.

Fanciful in the extreme, although I do believe they had mutual truces for Christmas Day in the trench warfare theatre.

Yes and Germany won the Christmas Day 1914 soccer match 2 nil! I've only just studied that war's origins and, maybe, we should learn from the event. This was brewing for nearly two decades before 1914, and Germany was being shut out of much by the "triple entente" of England, France and Russia. (How are we treating an emergent China?) The assassination of the (actually hated and despised by the peoples and his own family) Archduke Ferdinand, in Sarajevo was just a pretext or the trigger. Kaiser William wanted to pull back from the brink, but the lunatic Prussian Generals were already sending troop trains toward Belgium, expecting the Belgians would let them pass--the rest, as they say, is history. As an interesting aside, a military expert said, in the mid 90s, that a future war would be a protracted, entrenched slaughter.

It's just a shame that (a) a 303 bullet didn't find a place in the vitals of a certain Corporal on the German side and (b) that our treatment of Germany after the Armistice was so punitive that the resulting depression and chaos saw to it that said ex Corporal became Chancellor in 1933.

Actually, is it possible that the most formidable weapon for peace is the world wide web, and forums such as ours, where peoples from across the planet can correspond, hopefully with mutual respect and understanding, and it becomes unthinkable for governments to go to war, as the outrage from the people would stay their hand.
