Uncle Al

Yes and Germany won the Christmas Day 1914 soccer match 2 nil! I've only just studied that war's origins and, maybe, we should learn from the event. This was brewing for nearly two decades before 1914, and Germany was being shut out of much by the "triple entente" of England, France and Russia. (How are we treating an emergent China?) The assassination of the (actually hated and despised by the peoples and his own family) Archduke Ferdinand, in Sarajevo was just a pretext or the trigger. Kaiser William wanted to pull back from the brink, but the lunatic Prussian Generals were already sending troop trains toward Belgium, expecting the Belgians would let them pass--the rest, as they say, is history. As an interesting aside, a military expert said, in the mid 90s, that a future war would be a protracted, entrenched slaughter.Kirbstone wrote: they had mutual truces for Christmas Day in the trench warfare theatre.
