Thank you all for your kind comments. The tartan is Glen Mhor, and the kilt I made myself, about 4 metres instead of the usual 7 or so. Very comfortable.
I did not really mean to hijack the meteorological thread; my intention was to say that we had blue sky, overcast grey, sun, rain, thunder & lightening all on that day, but luckily all was well timed, and we were indoors for the rain and out for the sun (between home, town hall, photos in the park and the evening reception. Nothing excessively hot or cold until the dj said we had to keep all the doors and windows closed so that his horribly amplified recordings would not disturb the neighbours. He found it hard to believe that it was also disturbing a lot of the guests and blocking all conversation. Inside it got hotter and hotter, but the night air was delightful outside.

Yes, I find it totally incomprehensible why those who provide music at weddings &c. so often crank up the volume to intolerable levels, driving older people like myself out into the night air in order to converse and enjoy the evening.
We recently attended the wedding of my chaiside assistant whose husband is an Army bandsman and who has his own band part time & does gigs &c. His band played at his wedding and they started off in a large room at such volume that we immediately had to retire outside onto an adjacent terrace area, where we danced and conversed comfortably. A brisk walk through the aforementioned room to get to the loos meant running the gauntlet of ear damage.

Wonderful that you actually made that lovely kilt yourself, Martin. I take my hat off to you.

It's in the upper 90 F all this week in the Chiacago area. Temp. indexes of 100+ during the day. A muggy mid 80s at night.
Not good sleeping weather.
The air conditioner is running constantly day and night.
It is also action air days. Thw air quality, in this heat, is so bad that anyone with brathing problems, like me, is supposed to stay indoors and not strain yourself. So I don't. Not much else I can do. Some brave neighbors use their pools. But it's almost too hot for that unless you in the pool.
Maybe this could help cool everyone down!

Dag Nab IT!
I always get this upload stuff wrong. Only meant to post one picture and did two!
But here's another cool weather shot!
This should make everyone feel even cooler.
Wish we could can some of this and release right after a bad snow storm so no one would have to shovel any driveways or side walks. At leas with the rain it just falls and you don't don't have to try and pick it up.

Funny you should mention this, Tom. This last Saturday evening I filled in on bass with a band for a wedding reception and we had volume issues. Not with the band but with the Event Director [ED] of the venue [ http://www.kohl-mansion.com/index.html ]. I'm not real sure who's idea it was to have us set up in this one particular room [certainly not ours...] that had all hard surfaces, which makes it real bad for even the most quiet band. Long story short... the ED wanted us to stop playing at 10:30 pm due to receiving a noise complaint from someone in the neighborhood. The bride was furious with the ED because she had rented the venue until 11:00 pm. We were contracted to play until 11:00 pm also. Definitely one of the most challenging gigs I've done in a long time! Needless to say, I spent my breaks outside, away from the crowd, enjoying the cool evening breeze!

At noon 2 p.m. today, Weds. 7/19/11 it was 102 deg. F in the SHADE at my house!
When I let the dogs out they run outside, turn around and want to come back inside right away.
They stay out longer in the below zero weather then they doing in this heat!

Some days here at latitude 53 degrees plus the temperatures struggle to get into the twenties Celsius, which means that it's pleasant Summer weather.
These days arrive either singly or in short groups between North Atlantic depressions which sweep in and send temps.back down into the low teens....usually for weeks at a time.

All this makes our temperate flowers grow in profusion and when the Sun appears we get out there and photograph the results:

Thank you for those images, Tom. As usual, I am completely blown away by the scope and beauty of your little corner of the world. I wish our place looked a 10th as good.

Our lupins have already gone by, but some of the other flowers are doing nicely. Perhaps I shall try to get some shots this afternoon after I get home.

Modesty becomes you, Carl. I've seen pics. of your lovely gardens, where you and Diana must spend hours directing your pressed teams of gardeners, topiary contractors &c.&c. while you recline and sip pink gins on the terrace.
Later on today we're off for an extended week-end down to our 52nd parallel hidey hole in Kerry, where it doesn't get too hot and never freezes either. There the fuchsias grow into trees to line the litle roads in red for much of the year, and we need to take the hedge cutter to them to preserve our view!
Rs Fuchsias & Montbretias at Kinnard.jpg
Our first task on getting down there is to cut the foot-high grass. After a few goes at it it's almost a lawn again. Fortunately there's not much of it.
Then we tow our little 16 foot sailboat down and rig her on the beach on her trolley for use when the tide is right. She's our passport to the Mackerel, which are the World's best barbecue bite, bar none.
Rs Scimitar at Coomnakista slip..jpg
B'skelligs village is 7 miles away just over my head in this picture (wide angle shot by a friend) On that day a few years ago we got bacalmed on our way back, and looking over the foredeck straight down one could see the entire sea bottom only 50 feet deep.

There's a renewed faint whiff of a composite eight from here to compete in the Head-of-the-Charles on October 23rd, which might tempt me Stateside. Should this actually happen I would favour a chin-wag.

I pick my camera angles well. Altogether too much of our property resembles an outright jungle rathar than anything attractive and pretty.

I am outright jealous now. Fuschias are one of my favourites, and the best we can do here is have them as seasonal hanging plants on the back porch (in one of which a robin built her nest a few years back and hatched out a clutch of eggs which then fledged and flew away, much to our delight wathcing the scene unfold only feet from our back door).

That would be superb! I buy the first several pints, eh?

And do what Tom and I singularly failed to do in Henley; get a picture of the meeting for the forum.

Have fun,

Ian.

New York has a very moderate climate - 4 distinct seasons, but none offers a real temprature extreme.. Still, it has been uncomfortably hot (consistently in the mid 90s (F) and as high as 104) for most of the summer.

See what happens when you don't vote for Al Gore???

On another note, I just purchased a kilt from GoKilt.com, but didn't get it yet. Anyone have any experience with these?

Don,

I tried to search for GoKilt.com but did not find their website.
I did find Got Kilt and they have some interesting designs.

I love their slogans on T-Shirts, especially this one..........
. .It's a Kilt
. .If I wore
something under it
. .THEN it would
. .be a skirt.

(Blasted space bar will not insert the proper spacing for the slogan  )

Too true, Ian. I had a camera with me, but the conversation flowed so freely (as did the Brakspeare's) that the time for our parting came and you were gone off on that amazing mega-bike of yours before I realised that I hadn't gotten a mugshot of you/us. There'll come another opportunity, D.V.

That's great, Carl. I'm always very thirsty when someone else is buying!.....and I won't be driving, either.

Those 'Got kilts' are charging plenty for their crumpled offerings.

Just please do give me advance warning if the other crew decide to join. I know enough Irishmen to understand their drinking-habits -- especially if someone else is buying -- and what damage it can do to one's account. I can well afford two or three thirsty lads, but a fully-crewed eight (plus the always-thirsty cox) would require some advance planning. Not to mention, of course, if everybody shows up in trousers then I shall let the cat out of the bag! ;)
