Elevator Speech -- Reasons for preferring a skirt over pants

Post by JRMILLER »

Group,
I modeled 6 of my skirts last night for my wife, daughter and the daughter's girlfriend. The girlfriend asked, well, why would you prefer a skirt over pants or sweats? She clearly preferred sweats.

My answer seemed inadequate, so I would like to ask all of you for your "short answers" so I can always have my elevator speech (something delivered in 30 seconds while meeting someone in an elevator) ready to go.

My reasons are:

Well, I just like the feeling, that is legs free to move and cooler underneath.

I also like the variety of colors and fabrics available, the choices are far greater than what is available in trousers.

Any other thoughts?
-John

it's more comfortable

it's more FUN (delivered with evil grin)

i'm tired of being told what to wear

8 years in the military entitles me to wear what i want

i don't tell other people what to wear, and they'd best return the favor

these all work, depending on the situations and attitudes present (yours & theirs)

use & enjoy!

Skirts look nicer than sweats if you want to look nice, they're cooler than trousers in the summer, and they offer a LOT more possibilities as well!

The appropriate "speech" depends upon the audience. The Utilikilts web site has a very long list of comebacks, but they don't work in all situations: for instance, "Access!" is not what I would say to my boss's wife. I also think the simpler, the better -- most people just want reassurance that you're not an escaped mental patient or something.

For generic strangers on the street or near my home, I use "It's more comfortable." It helps that in those situations, I'm usually wearing something moderately drab (by my standards :) )

For people I don't know at dance festivals (where I'm likely to be wearing something bright and fluffy): I use "For fun!" If I'm in a situation where I'm likely to be with them a little longer (e.g., they're my partner in a dance), I'll go on about how it's cooler, especially when you move, plus that I want to stand out in the crowd.

I think it's important to be positive; we don't need to "defend" our choices, and it's better not to assume that people are criticizing us until it's impossible to interpret their comments any other way. One time (when I was wearing a kilt), someone asked me if I had been forced to wear it. I just responded that it was very much my choice. I figured that if his intent was to express disapproval, he was going to have to come out and say it plainly (why should I allow him to maintain "deniability"?), and if it wasn't, a simple correction would do.

No one has pressed me for more explanation than what I've given above, so I haven't had to come up with more detailed explanations. But even then, it would very much depend upon the situation and why I thought they wanted to know.

Haven't you   tried one yet :? :)

They're fun.

Skirts you enjoy, pants you just wear.

Just a choice.

Airy

Comfortable.

They let you express yourself.

A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.

Older politician speaks

Post by Since1982 »

I'm sitting as one of the older politicians here. My reasons, since 1972 inside the house and since 1982 outside, are simple and weren't mentioned explicitly by anyone other than to just say, more comfortable.

Male anatomy far out and away favor a skirted garment over trousers, all of mankind wore nothing but skirted garments below the waist until the onset of using horses as modes of transportation brought out the need for something to protect the inner thighs and crotch from the constant motion and rough exterior of a horse's back or saddle.

A male, having some personal appendages that females do not have, IN the area that sits a horse, needed SOMETHING to protect the crotch area, so leather tubes and a sewn on seat were put into use to do that protecting. These grew advanced, and were found to be useful in other things than just riding a horse, like open combat or wrestling, hence the onset and popularity of "pants, leggings, trousers, or whatever else they've been called throughout history".

On a female, trousers FIT much better than they really do on a male, unless there's a horse involved. The female crotch just naturally fits in the "between the legs area" of a pair of trousers without scraping on those aformentioned male appendages which the female doesn't have.

A skirt or skirted garment or any other MUG has no tight constriction in the crotch area to cause pain on those male appendages, WOW, why didnt we think of this all over the world when Automobiles were invented, making trousers for riding horses as primary transportation obsolete, except for the cowboy, jockey or show jumper. Even Mahouts in India ride elephants while wearing skirted garments without any problem.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth. I hope it helps satisfy your daughters friends. :):):)
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Another really good reason is design. A skirt has a bigger area for designs, images, and so on. I was working on some designs earlier this year which included various photos like cars, guitars, graphic designs and so on which only really work on a skirt.

You can't put complicated designs on trousers because the image will always come second to the shape. When you have a flat fronted garment you can put some neat stuff on there: 21st century kilts came out with some great designs on this same basis.

So if you're a designer, the skirt gives you a lot of scope for creativity, of which tartan is only one option (but which is used to good effect).
The only thing man cannot endure is meaninglessness.

It seem to me we are going through life making up "excuses" just because we want to be different and not main stream.

Excuses

Post by JRMILLER »

Richard,
Not excuses, simply trying to answer the question and further the acceptance of skirt wearing men.

Skip,
Excellent reason, I will need to work on the 30s version unless the building has 400 floors! :D

 You reminded me of a really bad example of this that I've seen on the web.

Okay, so it's not real...

My reason.

Why would I want to look exactly like everyone else?[/url]

A '20-second' response...

I don't make 'excuses', either..
Just give reasons -
It's cooler, more comfortable, more practical, and often better looking.
