Sewing Bee

Post by Susie »

Sadly, I am no longer able to sew but I enjoy watching the Sewing Bee.

This week one of the male contestants thought he'd wear a skirt for the first time and he also made a Viviene Westwood inspired dress for his male model.

All treated as totally normal as it should be.

Mrs Mouse watched the Sewing Bee and was remaking on this guy, who wore a skirt for the first time.

Fortunately I'm able to watch BBC1/2 still while not in the UK, and watched this last night. Though I can barely believe that the first time this guy ever wore a skirt was on national television, who knows, maybe it's true.

He not only wore a skirt, but actually made a Versace inspired dress for his male model. I thought it was pretty spectacular. There was no special comment on that. Not a lot of pictures on the internet, but I found this one. The judges felt there was not enough gold :P

There have been a couple of skirted made-to-measures on male models before, but usually with a comment I out gender or sexual orientation. For example, in one final a gay contestant made a ball gown for his gay friend and made a point of it.

In this instance, Kit (the sewer) is almost certainly gay and very camo, but his skirt would pass for “masculine” in most contexts except where two pipes are required. And the model looks like a perfectly straight guy (1) even though he is wearing a dress that would be described by many as “feminine”.

(1)Don’t jump on me for making assumptions. I’m reflecting the assumptions of most people in our society.

So I am watching Sewing Bee with Mrs Mouse this week, but Kit has swapped his skirt for a pair of yellow trousers. :( I guess he is exercising his choice, as is his right.

I’m frustrated with myself that I didn’t make comment about Kit’s skirt at the time. Not wanting to disturb our enjoyment of the programme I suppose. We did fall into conversation whilst shopping and MOH mentioned Esme’s outfits. I said I wouldn’t wear them and she joked they would be too short. Before I could say I wouldn’t wear them wear Kit’s skirt or the black and gold number, something happened to interrupt us. It’s not easy going back to a conversation so the opportunity was lost.

Don't beat yourself up, we all have times when our brain comes up with the great response, hours after it was needed.

Is your MOH still worried for your well being, if you go out in a skirt?

Hi Mouse.

I had wanted to give a longer, considered response but live has been a bit full on lately.

The main issue is that it’s another reason for her to feel odd. There’s lots behind that statement that I won’t go into in public and probably needs a on to one conversation.

There’s also loads of other stuff.

Not likely to be much change for the foreseeable future.
