This seems to be a non-event as much as Kanye West wearing a leather kilt at the 12-12-12 concert. Men can wear kilts as they have for hundreds of years. A real man would wear a real skirt, not a kilt. When I can wear a regular skirt, heels, and pantyhose at Times Square without being gawked at, without strangers making assumptions about my mental sanity, my sexual perversions, my non-conformance to social norms, my ability to function in society, then I will consider that we have made progress. So excuse me if you find my yawning annoying.

Granted, it's a small step.

I dunno about Times Square, though. I always thought of it as a bit on the fringe anyway. But Wall Street, or maybe the WallMart in Lubbock, Boise, or Biloxi, that would be something.

I disagree, Brad.

Firstly, any kilted man at an event like that is good, particularly if he is not a Scot flaunting his Scottishness! For most people, a man in anything except trousers is outre. The kilt is a widely recognised mens' skirt, and the more men in the public eye wear them , the better.

Secondly, maybe he prefers the kilt to a skirt. Why should he choose a skirt?
Keep on skirting,

I wasn't disputing Mr. Andrews right to wear a kilt. Or anyone's right to wear a kilt. I was merely saying that I consider it a non-event.

Indeed it was a non-event -- and for two reasons. One, kilts are already perfectly accepted on blokes especially when accompanied with most of the regalia. Mr. Andrews was in proper Scots regalia. Two, the motion picture was set in Scotland, so it might be construed that the director was merely "appearing in costume".

From a personal perspective, both of those "reasons" are fine. When will the day come when we don't need a "reason" to dress so? That's what I'm waiting for.

You stated the point so well Carl. And I had forgotten that he directed Brave.

Your notion of needing a "reason" reminds me of men who seek socially acceptable "reasons" to wear skirts, like Halloween, a charity fund-raising dare, or a fraternity initiation.

Yet another view, though much of this is familiar here.

Totally unnecessary, I know, but I was a little disappointed he wasn,t in his clan tartan. (Ross, I know this as I am an Andrews on my Mother's side)--Sassenach on the Father's, and actually with Plantagenet bloodlines----Why wasn't I invited to great (add a few centuries more greats) uncle Dick's funeral after they found the poor sod under a carpark. I want UCOS to investigate!! :P

Great article in Huffpost which I am sure has words any of us could have spoken :

" The simple truth is that I wear a kilt because I like it. I like the way it looks and the way it feels. And, admittedly, I want to stand out from the crowd. I appreciate the attention it garners.

I wear a kilt often, for no reason other than the fact that is the garment I pulled from my closet that morning. I have many of them: tartan ones, solid colors, denim, even a leather one. ... . I wear them to work, to the supermarket, to the movies, wherever I feel like it. People may look at me oddly, but I do not care."
