Trousers outnumbered

Post by Sarongman »

I went to the Anglican church today (trousered) as I wanted to attend an Anglican communion again, after some years in the Catholic fold. While kneeling after communion, I watched the people coming down to the altar rail and noted that the women tended to favour skirts over trousers by about ten to one. This may be because this is a country town with a more, dare i say it, conservative outlook. Let's say this would, in the U.S. be a staunch Republican stronghold. I have suffered no adverse comments re. my attire, but may be regarded as the local eccentric--harmless but a real crackpot.

Has anyone overseas noted similar dress behaviour among churchgoing women?

We were holidaying in Barbados and attended the local Anglican cathedral in Bridgetown the Sunday we were there. The High-Church Communion service was very well attended, but we were perhaps the only white faces in the building.
Everybody was dressed in their Sunday best, especially the ladies, most of whom also wore hats. All were skirted, of course. The choir processed up the center aisle followed by the celebrants and the singing was heavenly, to put it mildly. Altogether a lovely and uplifting experience, and for them it was just their ordinary Sunday, nothing special, but it was, for us.

Music is the only thing that may get me into a church, but I usually feel very much in the minority among all those elderly trousered women.
