We have met the enemy and ...

Post by Taj »

He is us.

My wife and I work out of the same community ceramics studio. Today we were there at the same time. I was trimming some pots on a wheel and she was at the hand building table with several ladies and building a coil creation. I heard her call my name saying "come here." Instantly I knew she was up to something. Her friends hadn't noticed that when I came in I was wearing my black denim Utilikilt. She was putting me on display and all I could do was play along. The next thing I hear her saying is that I wear a skirt better than she does. Well, they had their fun and I went back to my wheel. Later, at dinner I jested her about her comment and she simply said to take a compliment where it's given.

Guys, it ain't the wimmen we have to sell the idea of men's skirts to. It's us.

Interesting story, Taj. I think reaction from people when you are wearing a skirt/kilt is exactly what the garment looms like, and the other 50% hinges on the way you wear it (including what else you are wearing with it, your demeanor and your confidence).

The moral is to wear something appropriate and masculine, team it up with an overall masculine look, be bold and confident, and then just about everybody will admire your look. Guys who wear skirts only start to attract hostility (which you call "enemies") if they take the viewer outside of their comfort zones by, for want of a better term, "gender-blending".

I'm pretty sure that my "normalcy" when I walked in, and the fact that many there have seen me and another potter kilted, lent to not being noticed. I try to look nice rather than sloppy or garish. My opening comment was from the old comic, Pogo. We are our own worst enemy. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogo_(comic_strip)
