Twins
Twins
A while ago, one of my hens laid a rather large egg. I figured it was a double yolker and put it in the turning incubator just to see if anything developed. At day 19, I put the egg in the hatching incubator. Unfortunately, The humidity tanked just before the egg would have hatched.
I let the egg stay in the incubator and adjusted the humidity and waited a decent amount of time. But, alas, no hatch. I candled the egg and thought there uwas some development. Out of curiosity and figuring that anything that might have been was dead, I opened the egg. Inside were two fully formed chick embryos, yolks fully absorbed. If the humidity had been stable, those babies would have hatched.

Hi Diana,
What a disappointment that must have been, to have lost your chick twins at such a late stage. Bright side is, that such a hen is more than likely to do it again, and better luck next time with the incubator. Of course, a real broody hen is actually best, but then the egg would be in with lots of others and the spectacle of twins hatching would be lost to you.
Right now we have a yard full of chicks and little ducklings running all over the place. We haven't bothered counting them all yet !
Cheers, Tom

Re: Twins
I was on the canals last week, disappointing lack of the usual wildlife but plenty of ducks. Wonderfully amusing animals they are, and many youngsters amongst them, some no bigger than hens eggs. I didn't skirt this time, or kilt. Not until I was heading back up to Scotland. A week of rain and showers meant I needed warm plumage! I find a skirt alright for sailing where you are generating body heat, but just standing holding a tiller lets you get quite chilled down. So much for Summer!

Yes, our weather would induce mass suicide, in that for the whole of May and June the temps. have stayed in the low to mid teens, with little Sun and a lot of wind and showers....probably rain up where B&B lives. We're all suffering from SAD here (Seasonal Affected Disorder)
I visited Her Majesty's Sceptered Isle & the big garden show at the Birmingham NEC last week and luckily caught sight of Sapphire getting into her Limo. It's a lovingly restored Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire! Note, she's wearing a floral creation down to ankle length.
