How we age!

Post by DALederle »

This was forwarded to me in an e-mail and I think the older members, such as myself may be able to relate to this!

Many of us are guilty of looking at others our own age and thinking, "Surely, I can't be that old". If you've ever done this, then you'll appreciate the following.

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist.
I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.
After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School.
"Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a mustang," he gleamed with pride.
"When did you graduate?" I asked.
"In 1965," he replied. "Why do you ask?"
"You were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely ... and then that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled, fat ass, gray-haired decrepit son-of-a-***** asked, "What did you teach?"

Did you laugh?

Great yarn, Dennis.
I must admit I keep a weather eye out for people of roughly my own age attending my Office. There are a handful of people in their eghties who are totally in control, drive their own cars, do all sorts of activities and look marvellous. I take great encouragement from them, and am truly sorry for those who are still in their 60s like me, but are on multiple meds, have rotten mutilated mouths and/or other disabilities and clearly will make younger bones.

Lots of people who don't see me often ask if I am retired. That for me will be a very sad day indeed, and one not to be even contemplated for the forseeable. Axial to this attitude is my fortunate retention of visual acuity and manual dexterity which are crucial to my game....specialist dentistry. It also helps to require zero meds.

It's impossible to fend off the wrinkles and loss/whitening of hair, but not yet has anyone remarked on that at my work.

I recently came in contact with my ex wife via Facebook whom I haven't seen for over 40 years. My, how she's aged! I, of course, haven't.

Ahem, yes the hair and beard are getting pretty white. Cant do much about it so I guess one just carries on regardless!
And yes I did get a laugh out of that piece!

Something that brasses me off a bit about this aging, is that the skin becomes delicate in that if you brush past something there might be a huge welt on the arm, or an inexplicable bleeding scratch.
This is a universal thing, and it is a wonder the much vaunted medical profession hasn't put a bit of research into it.

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago when selling a South Atlantic Snapper-Grouper Federal Permit to a man from Wilmington N.C. who drove down here to pick it up and pay for it in cash. As we discussed fishing over lunch at IHOP we got around to where we both came from originally. Turned out we both were at Fort Lauderdale High School in the Winter of 1960. This man was completely bald, deeply lined from many years of ocean fishing, as I am, but I'm not bald, I still have my mostly blond hair thanks to heredity. I assumed he was a teacher at the time as he looked sooooo old. He probably weighed around 160 while I was around 280 and all my deep lines and gullies were filled in, same with my face. It turned out we were both definitely in school the winter of 1960, however, I was graduating and he was entering the 9th grade as a Freshman. He was actually 4 years younger than I... I use the term "was" as he passed away 5 years ago of prostate cancer. A problem I may "hopefully" avoid due to the wearing of skirts instead of trousers. I can only hope I started with full time skirting early enough to fend it off at the pass. :blue:

Life is like a hot bath.
It's nice while you're in it, but the longer you stay, the more wrinkled you get!

Skip/Since 1982 has made nice complimentary remarks about me on Kilts, Kilts, and to point out why they were not really deserved I post the following under this thread heading.
While the overall weight has remained about the same, these pics. taken 43 years apart attest to the loss of muscle mass in the shoulders, chest and thighs, with compensatory gains round the middle, so to speak. The dark brown hair has long since gone, of course!
In 1968 I was in the middle of serious competative boat shoving round Europe.....which I'm still at, only rather more sedately, these days!!!
In deference to the Missus I have cropped her out of Pic. 1.
The heavy free weights we pumped in the '60's to produce pecks & quads like that caused lumbar spinal damage requiring surgery in 1996 with the loss of nearly an inch in height.. They did a good job though, and I'm free of pain &c.

Yes, I'll certainly go along with that. The ones who bring their bodies up to a great peak of fitness in their younger years fall apart a lot more than those like me who just maintain a good middle level with walking and carrying and so on in normal life, and so don't fall apart the same. I am going on 72 years this year, and feel fine.

Aw, You're being hard on me, Jack Track! You're pulling three years' rank on me, and looking great with it....an example to us all. However, if I had my time again I'd do the same with my body. Through my chosen sport/obsession I met my lovely wife of 42 years and had a lot of really great thrills. The comeraderie with fellow rowers and the trips down the years have all been wonderful.
A look into any gym nowadays is a feast for the eye with all those sophisticated machines which pretty well ensure that today's athletes won't suffer long-term injury like a lot of us in my day did. Hindsight is 20-20.
Fortunately by the mid nineties my crushed lower spine, osteophytes and ruptured discs were treatable by keyhole surgery and I have enjoyed a great result.

'Falling apart' is the result of either abuse or disease. A public example of abuse was the late Marlon Brando, who as a young man was as hard as nails, but who allowed himself to become very obese in later life, as a lot of people do. A Polish chap who ran 4X100m.relays with my nearest brother in the '60's went back to Poland, joined their then Olympic squad, took the anabolic steroids &c.that were handed out to them, and was dead at age 32. Disease is another thing, and those of us who have escaped it have won the lottery.

Wow, that's a really TERRIFIC switch. Victoria's Secret started in business carrying ultimate intimates and very fancy women's clothes. To see them now carrying CARGO Skirts is a terrific thing to see. They see the burgeoning Men's skirt market and are hopping in with uni-sex skirts. That's really great to see. :thewave:

Yes, I have been organizing these denim and cord skirts to look good as I stride around. Used to thrash out my Levis between the legs all the time, and I refuse to wear funny shorts. I am a lot fitter than my much younger doctor! I met up with him walking back from the supermarket one day and had slow down to about half speed as we talked. I guess doctoring is ironically a pretty unhealthy sedentary occupation!
