Stage Manager in a skirt

Post by Charlie »

I've just finished Stage Managing the local amateur pantomime. The unwritten dress code for backstage crew is to wear black, although most of the guys just wear something dark.
In theatre, the Stage Manager has (so I'm told) absolute power backstage. So I re-interpreted the dress code: provided it's black or very dark, wear what you like. I called the first two performances wearing trousers and didn't enjoy the discomfort, so called the remaining six shows wearing what I'd worn during rehearsals - black shoes, black knee-high socks, black tights (50 deneer, nice and warm), black corduroy kilt, dark blue turtle neck top. No-one complained or commented, I was comfortable and probably did a better job than when I called the show wearing trousers.
All the men in the cast wore tights and tunics which hung from the shoulders. I wonder how many of them found their stage costumes more comfortable than their normal daywear.

If I want to dress like a woman, I'll wear jeans.

I'm glad you got some comfort! Today I went to the Perks, a coffee shop about three blocks from where I live. I just wore my blue t-shirt, a blue straight skirt, just below the knee (I like it because it has POCKETS!), my grey jacket, and socks and tennis shoes (I honestly don't care for heels). I didn't get any adverse reaction, not many even gave me a second glance. I can reiterate what many have said, it seems like the counter help is more friendly when I wear a skirt...maybe because I'm helping them break the monotony? :?
I used to wear a skirt just about everywhere but I had a negative experience while visiting the nursing home which is the last place I would have expected a negative experience, so I cut back a bit. Can't wait until I get a proper kilt, then I'll probably wear it everywhere, all the time (except to work  ).
