Winter in Europe??????

Post by DALederle »

Wow!
I thought winter in Chicago was bad. And we do have our moments.
But last night on the news it mentioned the winter Europe was having a lot of snow and how badly Scotland was being hit!
So to all our European brethren out there, how are you doing?
What kind of challanges are you facing from this weather, if any?
Just remember, Spring is only three months away!

On the Scottish West coast we have just about finished thawing out. Most of the snow which turned to lethal ice has dissappeared, but, this morning we are back to sub-zero temperatures, getting ready for the next onslaught I suppose.

In Chicago, today, we are getting hit with blizzard (Not DQ) warnings. About 4-9 inches predicted with a fudge factor for more. Followed by single digit (F) temps. Br-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-!

Where does it move in to? Your neighborhood, town or bedroom? It gets cold in the winter here too, comparably... haven't noticed the Arctic visiting yet tho.

It moves into the neighbourhood, when things get really bad it drops to sea level, so my village gets it. When I run out of heating oil it gets as far as my bedroom, thank the 'Wee Man' that my waterbed has an electric heater!

Skip! My father-in-law lives in the keys, at Marathon. I've been down there in the winter.
Cold for you must be...what? About 72%F? Maybe as low as 68%F. Anytime they come up here and it's not summer they are wearing jeckets when we are in shirt sleeves.
It's all relative.
We were down there once the week before Christmas and swam in the ocean. Woke up in the morning and went out to the beach in shorts, t-shirt and sandals!

B and B,
You have had it pretty nasty up there in Scotland, as well as those in the North of England. We have just had a third lot of snow dumped on us here in Wales. The second and third lot was dumped on top of ice leading to interesting times.
Cwmbran and the eastern valleys always seem to cop it, whereas Newport , only 5 miles away, just get a dusting or nothing at all. Its the temperatues though that have caused the pain---constantly below freezing point for weeks. We have January and February to get through yet. One thing for me though, this will be the last winter I will be driving articulated trucks. I retire next September after 40 years of punching up and down Britains roads. I won't miss it.
Greg
PS. It was warmer in Moscow than here the week before last. Balmy weather.

Hasn't snowed here for a few days now, but hasn't been above zero either, the snow has stayed as compressed snow and hasn't had a chance to do the normal trick of turning to ice. Pity I am running out of heating oil, I just hope it lasts until I can get more, which won't be this year! I dread the thought of my new outside boiler freezing up as it's supposed to stay very cold until sometime in January.

Woe is me etc!

I suggest you all migrate over here to balmy S.E.Ireland where last night it had been minus 17, and when I set out before dawn to collect my daughter off a 'plane at Dublin it was minus 13....positively mild! Problem was, we had had a further 5" of snow, but I hit lucky. As soon as I hit a 'normal' road a mile away from my drive, I slotted in right behind a snow plough doing a good 40 mph, which led me the 5 miles to our M'way junction, so all was well.
Driving East, I didn't get a look at the eclipse, which was right behind me at 07.40 hours. Pity. Right now in mid-afternoon we're all basking in a heady minus 5 degrees.....Time to shed the Michelin suit.

These pics. I saw on our inland waterways site today. I had submitted my photo of icicles on this bridge taken in 1962, but these are tops.

The bridge was built nearly 200 years ago to a Thomas Telford design and carries the Grand Canal over the river Barrow at my birthplace, Monasterevin in three 40 foot granite arches. The constant leak through the stones provides the icicles.

I'll just add my old pic. for comparison. We hit those temps. during the '62-3 Winter hols. and the ice on the canal itself reached 8" thick ! I was a Med. student at the time.
