Breathing clean air!

Post by DALederle »

How important are the new non-smoking restrictions in the workplace?
I'll give you an example based on my own experience.
After a doctor's appointment last Monday I began thinking about something my doctor had told me. I complained to him that I had quit smoking 13 years ago right after he had informed me that I had moderate emphysema. I hoped to arrest the damage to where it was then. For the first 3 year afterward I felt great. Much improved. I was still bowling (I carried a 187 average, not to shabby) and my one regret was I never rolled a 300 game. My high game was 297. I still went out trap shooting, I was a class AA trap shooter, 23-25 clay birds out of 25. I shot hoops and could almost dunk (I used to be able to dunk the ball in high school). I even went out in the woods and fields to hunt a few times and went canoing with a friend.
Then the breathing began getting worse again. The last few years I'm told I have severe emphysema now. I've also had chronic bronchitis and bouts of pneumonia. My doctor said that the problem was because as we age the natural lung fuction gets less.
But that night as I mulled what he said over in my mind when I tried to get to sleep a thought hit me.
I had quit smoking and so did my wife and the kids were no longer allowed to smoke in the house. But the company I worked for hadn't gone smoke free until it was forced too, about two years ago, just before I retired because of my health problems. For eight hours a day, 5 days a week I was exposed to second hand smoke almost everywhere in the buildings at work. I had a small smoke free zone aroundmy desk but that was all.
So realistically, as my wife pointed out, I didn't really stop smoking until two years ago. I'll have to talk with my doctor about that the next time I see him.
Now I wonder. If this was just two years ago is there any hope for improvement in the next few years? I don't mean getting back to where I was. But just getting better, enough that I don't struggle quite so hard?
I don't know. I'm not a doctor! But now I hope so!

Oh, drat.

[Mod hat on]

Whilst I understand the many vagaries and contradictory laws regarding the use (and misuse) of cannabis, I feel that it's time to put this to rest as it's not particularly germane to the notion of men in skirts. Discussion of the various theories of why assorted governments take the view that they do is relevant conversation, but not here.

Thanks.

Dang it, I really wish that blasted thing would stop talking to me. In tongues, yet!

Right, Carl. A discussion like this will in just a bit show up on search engines and I fear draw people that we would rather not have to the Cafe.

I edited all reference to it out of my posts. I didn't want to stir the pot. I didn't START the talking about smoking of any kind tho. Someone else did. I really doubt any "bad people" are coming from the internet. This is my last word on the subject. :D :D :D

How did this get from there to here?
I'm amazed sometimes. It's like the old kids game of telephone! Start with a group of kids in a circle and pass a simple statement around and see how skewered it gets. "Johnny has blue eyes" end up being "Johnny tore out Smantha's blue eyes" or something.
I was only speculating about an idea my wife had given to me.
My own assumption that I had quit smokin years ago might be wrong because of second hand cigarette smoke.
I wasn't talking about illegal or banned things.
I have almost no oppinion on cannabis, since I've never used it. Never!
Even my kids say to me, "Dad! Everyone's smoked pot!" and I confound them be explaing that I naver have. I've been around other people who have (and arrested a few too, when I had too) so maybe I got some second hand exposure but that was 25+ years ago.
I do agree that it is a complete waste of our government and police's time and money trying to enforce some very conflicting laws that the AG of the United States, in 1934, declared to be a medical problem and NOT the purview of police departments. That was the case until J.Edgar Hoover needed a new cause after Prohibition was ended.
Keep in mind, the FBI was never intended to be an "enforcement" organization. It was intended to be and become a modern, state of the art, investigation organization but not one that did enforcement.
But my post was about wether or not I had any hope for my breathing getting better or wether it's too late for me to hope for some new, good news.
I hope every day for a new medical development in COPD.
I'm not upset, or anything, just amused by the way some posts go off in a different direction then they were intended too!
