Skirted men spotted in the wild

Post by Milfmog »

I thought it might be interesting to have a thread where folks could report sightings of other men in skirts or kilts (I seem to remember a similar thread sometime ago but did not find it in a quick search).

While I have been out of work I have joined a walking group that meets in my area about once a fortnight. Most of the members are retired but not all and walks tend to be fairly easy terrain and ten or twelve miles in length. I have been meaning to post here to say that all the walks I've joined them for have had at least two kilted men on then (apart from me).

The first time I joined them I took a kilt, a pair of Craghoppers walking trousers (with removable legs) and my Fat Face wrap skirt, so that I could pick the appropriate style of dress to avoid causing ructions in the group while still seeking to join it. There were two guys in Sport Kilts so I bit the bullet and wore my skirt. It received several compliments from other walkers, both kilted and trousered, and no unsupportive reaction at all so I have worn that for all the subsequent walks too.

I went on one of the walks last Friday with the largest party I've yet seen, 20 walkers in total. Of these four were in kilts, one was wearing a skirt bought from a charity shop then split up one leg seam to allow a full stride and one had a "mini kilt" which was actually a short, pleated tartan skirt with an elastic waistband. As usual I had my wrap skirt but there was also a chap (in his early 50s) in a denim miniskirt, about 13" I'd guess. He wore it with a t-shirt, sweater and denim jacket so that he could vary the number of layers to suit his temperature through out the walk. Two ladies walked with us, one of them skirted the other in a just below the knee dress. In total that meant half of the group were skirted, eight of them men!

Most of the guys changed into jeans or shorts before we went in to the pub after the walk for a meal but I and the chap in the denim skirt did not change. We drew a few curious looks from other patrons and from the staff but the only remark I overheard was one waitress (about 18 years old) who commented to another that she thought it was good that some men were not afraid to wear something different. Unfortunately she then spoiled it by adding "shame they are both so old" :( Oh well, when I was 18 I guess I thought anyone pushing 50 was a coffin dodger.

Given the discussion of rain skirts for carriage driving and shooting elsewhere on the forum, I am starting to wonder whether the practicality of skirts for some outdoor pursuits may be a driver that helps to bring men's skirts into the public consciousness.

Have fun,

Ian.

That's funny. If 50 is a "coffin dodger"...what would they call someone like me at 67? A "hole digger"? Maybe someone in their 80's would be an accident looking for a place to happen.

It's OK tho, I remember thinking guys in their 50's and 60's should just hurry up and die and make more room for youngsters like I was at 12. I was brought back to Earth by one of those older guys telling me if I didn't change my attitude I may not LIVE to see 50, or much less, a chance of seeing 60. I guess what he said sank in. 8)

"Hole digger" at 67??? Not really sure. In this elder and with some health issues all you could do would be leaning on the shovel and waiting :D

When young, you don't see the whole picture. You must be a bit lucky to live long enough to be regarded as an "coffin dodger".

Proud to be 61. I've had a free bus pass for a year and not used it yet. I usually drive or walk.

I have to post on this thread, I'm 18 yrs old and will be starting college in a month. :D

My answer to the originally post, I've seen two men wearing utilikilts in Seattle on my Honor Band Trip. I also bought my first utilikilt while I was there (my fellow band mates really liked it, to my surprise).

Anyhoo, one of the men I saw was wearing a purple utilikilt, and the other was wearing a nice black one.

My only other skirted guy sighting was where I'm going to college, and his looked like he made it himself. I thought it looked really cool. I'm excited to bring all of my skirts/kilts to college to hopefully encourage more to take skirt wearing up.

Which college did you see the guy doing the multi-layer skirt with black/white stripe kneesocks? I frequently wear skirts/kilts @ my college (Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington - formerly Bellevue Community College)

It was in Missoula, MT, just a few states off. On my Honor Band trip last semester we played at Bellevue high school.

Cool. Good to see that at least Missoula seems to be a safe kilt/skirt area... Might be moving away from the Seattle area in the next couple years.

Why on Earth would anyone do such a thing, unless it was to move to Portland, OR/USA? (Financial constraints aside, obviously.)

OK, some background is needed here. Several years ago Sapphire and I touched all four "corners" of the US on a 2-week train trip. I loved the Pacific Northwest, and was particularly captivated by Portland; this is not to say I didn't adore Seattle (I did), it's just that Portland "caught me". The best part is that the two cities are separated by a very nice civilised train-journey. Oh, yes, I could move there if I didn't have roots here....

Back on-topic, I do not recall seeing a single guy in a skirted rig during the whole trip. This is possibly because it happened during the 1990s and I'd not yet properly "caught the bug" ('twas latent at the time, but that's not quite enough....).

Lived here all my life. Time for a change, and getting tired of the political atmosphere around here. There are some other factors as to why my family is thinking about moving that probably would be best not to be aired out in the forum...

John,

If you are looking for a skirt-friendly place away from Seattle, I can vouch for Missoula, my town. Outside of work, I wear skirts probably 95% of the time, summer, winter, whatever. Most people are very accepting, generally with no comments. I've received a few double-takes, and once someone made a rude comment as they walked past me. But Missoula is quite open, with the University of Montana bringing the great college vibe to the area. And our scenery and outdoor activities are hard to beat! Back on skirt acceptance, I've even been hugged by women (unknown to me) at the local farmer's market and complimented for having courage to wear something different from the usual jeans and t-shirt! It doesn't get any better than that!

And even stopping in central Montana to ask a rancher for directions was a non-event. So while there are prejudicial people all over, including Montana, the ones that will make negative comments are a distinct minority. So wear your skirts/kilts, hold up your head, and come on out to Big Sky country!

I took my wife to the Chippenham Folk Festival last bank holiday. We went primarily to contra dance with Cis Hinkle as the caller, and we enjoyed several sessions with her calling.
While we were wandering around the festival, we saw two men in kilts. One was the traditional tartan, and the other looked like a black corduroy. I thought it might have been a Union Kilt but didn't have the logo on the back. As seems to be the way, the guy in the black kilt disappeared before I could catch up to him and say hello.
Thinking about it now, I should have watched the reaction (or lack of) of the people around him.
During one of the contra dances, I partnered a little, not so young lady. She was very positive about the kilt (I wore a brown corduroy Union Kilt) and was very supportive of men in skirts generally, and thought how sad it is that more men don't wear skirts. I promised another dance with her, but didn't see her again - there were several hundred people there.

The fact that you didn't think to consciously watch for reactions probably means you watched unconsciously and didn't see any reactions. Any reaction would have leapt out at your mindset. I know it would have at mine. :P
