Good article! Had some very positive responces.
Then, too, there were a few pompous a** responders
who probably have to turn the light on before they
get out of bed. ( In broad daylight no less! )

Now, back to the article. If the 'designers' had thought
beyond their noses, the 'looks' would not have been as
hideous as those pictured. The models looked like they
came from another world, not planet earth. When will
the 'designers' realize that 'Brash' is not the best way
to promote and sell clothes, unless the 'designers' were
trying to 'spoof' the concept. When I saw the first picture,
I thought it came from 'The Twilight Zone'. ( Not a pretty sight!)

Now, for a look that is 'befitting' a gentleman.

The next thing is to get this idea across to the main male public
at an affordable price. Howie has a great product, but the
everyday person can't afford it! His idea will work with regular
skirts too. A shallow flare A-line, or a simple pleated skirt* would
also do the same thing. I love his design. I can't afford it.

Anyone know of a manufacturer who would be willing to take
on this project?

would accomplish this effect with a lot less material.

Ugh, more ignorant statements

"I just can't see men wearing skirts" or other such stupid statements.

Do they not realize that the same nonsense was stated about women going out in public wearing pants. It was scandalous for crying out loud.

Now those examples in a term suck rocks. They really look awful. One looks like a bolt of material wraped around the model. The outfit with the hot pink leggings? What the heck was that?

Why can they just not take a more masculine looking WOMAN'S skirted outfit and put a male model in it? Why do they have to have these really awful examples run down the catwalk?

Here is yet another common and stupid statement "i'm not really for men in skirts!

It's just not right? What the hell does that mean? What is not right about it. Why is it more right for men to be walking about with their pants fallen down their legs and exposing their boxers? Or more acceptable for them to look like thugs or pimps? I'll tell you what just isn't right...empty headed idiots like people that say this kinda stuff about men wearing skirts.

I find I must agree with Pythos about the costume nature of the examples shown. The looks varied from the insane, through the weird, to the merely unattractive. The sad part is is that is completely unnecessary -- we, yes, us right here at SkirtCafe, have done vastly better, and we actually wear our stuff out on the street -- and, unless we're deliberately going for a "costumey" effect don't look like caricatures.

I really wish the designers would "get" this notion and stop sending unbelieveable looks down the runway.

I agree. But I see thew good in all of this. At least they are talking & designing skirts for men. Thats a good 1st step.

As a rule, runway designers aren't trying to promote and sell clothes to anyone who doesn't mind spending $25,000 on an outfit that they will only wear once and who demands to be noticed from across the room. If one of the outfits pictured ever did get copied and become popular, the designer would die of shame.

What does happen is that designers working for the ready-to-wear market (think Saks, Barneys, Nieman Marcus, Harrod's, Selfridge's, etc.) will take ideas from the catwalks and use them for people who don't mind spending $1,500 on an outfit that they may wear a few times and will get them noticed. These ideas will have to do with color, overall shape, draping, style, etc. Then, designers working in the department store market will take successful ideas from the ready-to-wear market and adapt them to what their customers are demanding.

Department store and mass market designers are the people where ordinary people (like us, maybe) may have an affect. Designers working for Gaultier or Ben Sherman don't care what 99.44% of the public think. Designers who want to sell to Macy's or Wal-mart better care or they'll fail. If those buyers see enough men in their stores buying skirts of a certain type or see men on the street wearing skirts of a certain type, they'll be sure to design something that looks just like it but just a little different to provide novelty. IMHO, having a department store designer do a utilikilt knock-off is far more likely than anything filtering from a catwalk to the store's racks.

Department and massmarket stores respond to demand. Couture is interested in "creativity" and doesn't care a fig about demand.

Those models DID come from another world..the world of "NEW"? fashion. The sicker and more skinny a model is the more he/she makes modeling.

Oh wow, I'm in love with the first photo. Sure a purple hairy sporran and pink leggings aren't for most kind of occasions but they sure make an impact. That outfit is plain fun.
