Now those are great photos. Thanks, Cessna!cessna152towser wrote:I should also perhaps add that some days my duties at the aviation museum also include guided tours of Vulcan XJ823, for which a kilt/skirt would be impracticable due to the need to climb the access and internal ladders.
I chose to wear trousers today

Retrocomputing -- It's not just a job, it's an adventure!
Wow! What a great kilted outfit!
Pythos, now I understand where you are coming from, the era that produced "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" and "Corportation Man" and led to the movie "Wall Street" accompanied by John Molloy's "Dress for Success" books.
I offer for your amusement the following story. From the late 1970s to the mid 1990s I worked for Data General Corporation, a Fortune 500 company and the third largest computer maker in the world.
DG's corporate image was that of wild and woolly nerdy cowboys. At some point IBM announced that it was going to compete in the same space as DG, ie the mini computer market.
DG responded with the following ad:
"IBM says their entry into the mini computer market will legitimize the business.
The bastards say welcome"
Not such a bland corporate image, huh?

Yea, but where is DG now?
It is not necessarily the image that bugs me. It is those people out there that base whether or not they are going to do business with an entity based on the appearance of their employees.
You could a shop turn out the best work in the world, but there are people in this world that will go to another place because of how the shop looks or it's employees lack of uniforms.
The grey flannel suit and the "dress for success" books are like holy water to a vampire for me. There is some guy here that runs a shop called the men's wearhouse. This bum was telling people over the TV that "casual Fridays" are dead, and the suit is back, then shows his ensemble of treacherously boring suits for men. Bland colors and hiding any shape of the man in the suit.
I went to a school that required a uniform. The reason uniforms are being proposed for public schools is to reduce the amount of kids getting picked on for not being able to afford the trendy new styles, or to elliminate "gang" colors. My experience in private school with uniforms proves that this is bunk. I got picked on for my shoes!!! My mother could not afford the expensive shoes, so we got the next step down...and I paid for it. Gang colors? They just work out some other way of "representing".
Uniforms don't work, and they kill creativity and self expression. At least in my book.

Well the bird is indeed gorgeous,Pythos wrote:Now that reason works. Makes total and complete sense.
And wow is that one gorgeous bird.
but you should be able to climb in and out of an aeroplane in a skirt/kilt, only the respective others who also want to go up the ladder would need to show some respect. What if a woman in a skirt or a man in a skirt / traditional kilt wanted to go up the ladder? Would she be denied that? Just be gentelmanly and wait until the person in question is up and off the ladder.
I do understand. Pants are much "easier"in that respect.

A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.
I guess you have been fortunate enough to not have your work put down based on your appearance

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!
I was a woman in a man's career: not only computers, but manufacturing.
Paid less than the men, passed over for promotions because of my sex, expected to "put" out, harrassed, etc
My dear Pythos, what were you thinking when you posted that?????

"
" almost didn't make it into the new "smiley lexicon"; there's a bit of pain associated with such things for me. But, I completely understand the frustration that technology can sometimes bring upon one, so I relented.
I've got a better one floating around someplace that has a PC on one side, a Mac on the other, and results in quite the smackdown (think explicit inter-computer violence).
As far as Pythos' hypothesis of having one's work put down because of one's appearance, I suspect I can safely say that anybody who's beyond their 20s has gotten slagged off on at some point for matters of "appearance" whether justified or not. I've had a good share of fecal matter tossed at me over the years for my hair, and how I'd "never amount to anything" (that coming from my grandfather). It's nice to know that none of it ever stuck, at least outwardly.

Saphire,
I found your response beyond the pale.
Did I say anything about having a job denied based on your race, sex, creed, or any other already protected aspect of life?
NO!!! I said your appearance.
I know women got screwed over in the past and continue to do so.
Does that make it right for my flying ability to be question merely because I wear skirts?
Should my work as a mechanic be questioned because I have a non corporate image?
That is what I am talking about, and that is what I was thinking when I posted what I did, that gave you, and the other person a big f-ing laugh.
It was not appreciated, especially following this crappy day.

You win. No one who believes in a corporate mission whatever the corporation has any creativity.
I hope you're being sarcastic here. I work for a non-profit corporation and I believe in my corporation's mission 100% and I think I'm pretty creative.
But even if I wasn't working where I am working now, I would never work for a company (and most companies are corporations) if I didn't believe in the mission.

Alex,
I was being sarcastic.
On one hand Pythos stated that those who follow the corporate image are dull and lack creativity. Then when I mentioned a corporation where employees stronly believed in the corporate mission and were very creative, his only response was that they weren't in business any more.
And the point was?
