A letter to a designer
A letter to a designer
This is the email I sent to Scott Gray, corporate contact of
the Men's Dept of Marc Jacobs Designs;
S.GRAY@MARCJACOBS.COM
Scott,
Many times I've observed Marc wearing a skirt. Are these skirts
his design or did he take them from his womens section and adopt
them for himself? If they are his design, why not showcase them in
the mens line? Many of us who enjoy wearing kilts and skirts are
tired of 'shopping across the aisle'. Isn't it about time that skirts for
men were brought back into existence? This isn't for cross-dressing
men, it is for and about the comfort of the skirted garment.
Please see http://www.skirtcafe.org which is discussing various options
for Men In Skirts. There are many other sites similar to this such as
http://skirts4men.myfreeforum.org and both of these sites do not
allow discussions about female impersonation. The forums are for
and about Men, as men, wearing skirted garments.
I may be but one voice, but for the one voice there may be 200+
who remain quiet. Please do not toss this idea off into the delete
file. Many of us are trying to make do with what is available or sew
our own skirts. We modify a pair of trousers into a skirt, some with
success and others we do over....................
Please help change the 'Western Cultural Mind Set' that Men In Skirts
is not taboo but something to be brought back into a mans wardrobe.
Bring back this 'choice' for men by designing functional everyday
wear, not just the 'Tuxedo' type which is for special occasions.
I don't like wearing expensive kilts ($450.00+) as an everyday item.
I wear my Stillwater Kilts ( http://www.stillwaterkilts.com ) but even at
(+/-) $80.00 each, this is still not in the realm of the common,
everyday man.
P l e a s e help Western Culture understand that skirted garments
for men are comfortable, cooler and healthier for men than having
'things' crunched that men do not want crunched.
Thanks!
Al

Good idea Uncle, I'll think about doing something similar. I was, however, a little concerned by this line:Uncle Al wrote:This is the email I sent to Scott Gray, corporate contact of

I do hope that Scott is not an ex-pat Brit or that may be somewhat unfortunately misconstrued.

Have fun,
Ian.

I put together a form letter that can be used by anyone with our aims, to send to Mr. Gray/Marc Jacobs. Anyone can use it as it's not one person specific. Here it is to send to
S.GRAY@MARCJACOBS.COM
I frequent a site for masculine, manly, MEN who prefer a kilt or MANskirt over the ball crunching torture chamber called a "Crotch" which kilts or MANskirts do not have. Prostate cancer has been linked to trousers. Disfiguration of the male organ has been linked to tight trousers.
When the average male gets up to go to work in the morning and puts on his trousers, he makes an unconscious decision of which side of the crotch he wants to torture his manhood in. With a MANskirt or kilt, this does not come into the equation, just comfort for the day.
I know you have Marc's ear. Please let him know there are hundreds of thousands of MEN who would buy MANskirts made to a MAN's specifications, instead of having to, with some embarrassment, "shop from the OTHER side of the aisle" then convert the wrong measurements to the correct ones with a tailor or seamstress.
There are dozens of sites like ours http://skirts4men.myfreeforum.org/ or http://skirtcafe.org/ that have memberships champing at the bit for a manufacturer that is interested in OUR purchases.

A great initiative, Uncle Al! Congratulations!

Going further with your idea, I think a similar message could be delivered to many other designers who have shown their interest in male-skirts. It'd also be great if they took a seat at our café, at least once!
These are the ones that come to my mind right now. I'm sure the list would grow larger and larger if we coducted a brainstorm among the patrons:
Jean Paul Gaultier, of course! He has been regularily including men-skirts in his collections since the 70s!
The indomitable Vivian Westwood
And, why not, much lesser know young designers, like Telfar Clemens:
http://www.telfar.net/main.html
And that German company I guess we all know already : http://www.anderslandinger.com/ Have they visited this forum?
Any more ideas?
Take care, and, again, congratulations, Al!
