What types of socks do you prefer?
I see that a lot of people here seem to prefer long or knee high types of socks. Does any one prefer short, ankle high, socks. I do like the trainer liner socks and I do find those very comfortable but too cold in the winter where I normally then wear thick slouch socks which can be pulled right up to your knees or scrunched, slouched, around your lower shin. Interestingly I have a few pairs of japanese loose socks and boy they look so good with a shortish skirt. I'm not sure about colours, I believe that the colour of your socks may say something about you but generally I wear white but have a range of really vibrant colours including hot pink, bubblegum, yellows and oranges.

Re: What types of socks do you prefer?
Most of my life I wore no socks at all, as I got older tho, I started getting swelling in my lower legs and poor circulation bringing on cold spots followed by very cold feet and lower legs. Around age 50 I started wearing white cotton diabetic socks all the time. I wore those until last year when I realized I was wearing 3 pair at the same time, 3 socks on each foot with still cold in my whole calf area. Due to a suggestion from a friend, I tried a pair of extra thick tights and was really surprised as to how warm they made my feet and legs. I didn't like the part that fits from my waist to knees tho, so I cut the legs off and pitched the pants part.
Using 2 pairs of tights legs only, and pulling them up to just below my knees, I find my lower legs and feet are toasty and feel great all the time. What a great discovery that was.

How appra-pro - a post about sox from whitesocks !
Maybe a bad pun - - -
When wearing standard length kilts I prefer the off-white cable knit with just enough to
fold over under the knee to hide the elastic band for flashes.
I have other colors; red, navy blue and black to wear with similiar or contrasting tartans.
Also a pair in purple to wear with the Pride of Scotland kilt which is a purple tartan.
For shorter kilts I wear either white or black slouched sox topping just below the knee.
I wear ankle or crew sox with skorts; tennis skirts or shorts.
Ankle sox extend just an inch or two out of the shoe.
The crew sox have about 10 inches or so visible material out of the shoe and can be folded
over once or twice to simulate ankle sox.
The color of your footwear (sox and shoes) will definitely make a statement about yourself.
The more brilliant or contrasty - the louder the statement.
Wearing a white blouse (shirt) with a dark pleated skirt or colorful tartan kilt and bright white
over the knee sox will certainly gather some attention - think school girl outfit!
Tone it down a bit with a athletic jersey; a little longer tartan kilt/skirt and lower the sox
to below the knee and cleated shoes and you are ready for field hockey.
With below the knee skirts the need for sox diminishes to the nylon hose types or none.
A generalization at best. What you put together will make a statement about how flashy;
outgoing you are or how conservative you are in blending in.
Hot pink, bubblegum, yellows and oranges will definitely set you apart from the norm but you
will blend in at a night club on a dance floor or other wild life fun. Have the fun and enjoy
the lime light!

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Re: What types of socks do you prefer?
Knee-high socks. Like Skip, I've found them to be the most comfortable of all socks, even though I don't suffer from the same issue. I also don't really care for the short sock look with a knee-length or shorter skirt (or kilt). Tried it a couple times in 2002, never did again.
Either wool kilt hose when cold, cotton (or acrylic) knee socks with kilts when warm, then, when skirted, it can be either of those, or trouser socks. Currently wearing a black pleated above-knee skirt with two pairs of trouser socks. Navy blue (mostly opague) underneath, then a pair of sheer gray trouser socks over the navy blue pair.

Skirted since 2/2002, kilted 8/2002-8/2011, and dressed since 9/2013...

Re: What types of socks do you prefer?
in a kilt:
tights or knee socks usually
in a skirt:
tights, stockings/pantyhose/knee-highs, trouser socks, toe socks
in pants:
toe socks, thin ankle socks
i don't like going barefoot, and i only like thick socks when hiking. so my favorite style is sheer hosiery or trouser socks.

Re: What types of socks do you prefer?
I find myself wearing knee socks with my skirts most of the time, because:
1. Tights look cool and are warm, but restrict air circulation and bind in critical areas and are hard to pull down and up when you need to (cf. posts on "The Necessary Visit".) I do wear tights when biking in cold weather, but I nearly always change when I get home.
2. Thigh-high socks and stockings don't stay up.
3. When it's cold, I wear long skirts with petticoats, but they still don't keep my calves warm.
4. When it's not so cold, but not particularly hot, I prefer shorter skirts, but still need to keep my calves warm. I've even worn knee socks with shorts.
5. When it's really hot, I wear a short skirt with sandals and (usually) no socks. At dance camp, I'll wear "crew length" socks because I don't like wearing dance shoes with no socks.
