Loose or form-fitting

Post by alexthebird »

When I was at the gym today, I noticed that most of the men were wearing big baggy shorts and big baggy T-shirts and it didn't seem to matter whether they were serious weight lifters, rail thin cardio junkies or guys whose physiques were, ah, less than perfect. At the same time, most of the women were wearing two or three form fitting stretch tops and stretchy shorts or pants, and again, it seemed independent of body shape or type.

On my way back from the gym, I notice the same thing. Men's jeans are baggy and shapeless. Women's jeans are form fitting. Men's sweaters and sweatshirts are square and tend to be oversize. Women's are cut to shape and, unless deliberately oversized, designed to show off the figure. Men's T-shirts are cotton and without shape. Women's T-shirts are cut smaller and tighter and have stretch in them.

So what is this? Are men not supposed to show what their bodies look like? Do we just assume that men's bodies are uninteresting?

Inertia, Skirt Chaser, and Sapphire - could you shed some light on this? Would you appreciate it if men wore clothes that had some shape and showcased what was underneath a little more?

Hmmm......

I think you've over generalized. Not all men wear baggy clothes and not all women wear form fitting clothes. I tend to hang out in loose fitting clothes that, to me, are comfortable and that I don't mind getting dirty in. Back in the day when I had a really hot bod, I would go for the leotards and tights look, but always worried about damaging them in one way or another. I'd also wear fitted jeans and t-shirts, but nothing so tight as to restrict movement

The men that you noticed may have similar feeling as what I feel today: wear what is comfortable and serviceable, dress for ones self.

That being said, I do appreciate a well dressed man with well fitted clothing, but don't care for the look of men in tight clothing. Yes, what is underneath is interesting and yes, I'd prefer to look at men in well fitting, well maintained clothing.

I do like Carl's sense of style when he is skirted. The garments fit well, give a sense of what is underneath and the outfits are well coordinated.

Hope that answers your question. If not, please feel free to ask me another question.

Sapphire, I bet you had a really hot bod. You look like someone that was really a looker a few years ago, Heck, you look pretty good now, Carl's a lucky man to have such a personable partner.

Hi Skip,
Thanks!

One of the biggest giggles came early on in our relationship. Carl had given notice from the job he had when we met and his co-workers got together a local watering hole to wish him well. I joined the group just after I got out from work. There was some jaw dropping and Carl just sat there grinning like the cat that ate the canary.

And I'm lucky to have Carl.

Just to keep this on topic, Carl looks great in his skirts and even in the frumpy nightshirt he has on right now. I'm actually glad he took up skirting.

I assume people just end up wearing what they want to wear like I do. Depending on what they can find of course, I remember reading an entertaining article in Utne magazine about a year ago which was the lament of a man who couldn't find baggy sweatpants. A search for the title "Desperately Seeking Sweatpants" should turn it up.

my high school days were filled with girls in this type of style, one in particular. even though we never dated, she liked to sit & talk with me in study hall or out on campus. the looks of her in leotard or bodysuit, snug jeans, and moccasin boots STILL makes me smile & bare my teeth  .

a later female companion wore leotards and tights regularly, and turned me on to their sensual aspects.

whether you're built like a model or not, leotards ALWAYS tell me the lady is body-aware and make me appreciate her a little more than i normally would.

for my own tastes, my clothing is loose or form-fit depending on my feelings at the moment.

You make it sound like: I'm actually glad he took up snowboarding. Like it was an event instead of a life choice. LOL :hide:

When I used to go to a gym in my area, I would always wear loose clothing (shorts, t-shirts etc. not form-fitting) because I found them more comfortable for exercise. It struck me that form-fitting workout clothes would hamper movement and hold sweat next to my skin, and I still can't figure out why that's supposed to be a good thing. I suspect -- don't know for sure -- that form-fitting workout clothes are worn mainly by people who want their forms to be gazed upon during the workout. But, never having worn tight workout clothes, I could be wrong; maybe they're just fine for exercising.

As for men's clothing always being loose and women's form-fitting, I would agree that that's a little general. It is true, however, that women's clothes are more apt to be designed to show off the body, simply because the cliche is that men like to look at women's bodies, and that women like to be looked at. I have news for the cliche: women like to look at men, too. But perhaps men aren't comfortable with that notion? I dunno. What do you say, guys?

All I know is, if men wear kilts and skirts, I get to ogle their legs more. And that *is* a good thing, as far as I'm concerned! :-)

Cheers,

Jill

I love leggings. They are quite form fitting, and contrary to popular beliefe they do not hold moisture next to your skin, in fact the evaporate quite well on hot days. As far as limiting mobility, this is something I have heard when it comes to tights or leggings. I have only experienced a large increase in the freedom of movement when compared to sweats, or jeans.

I myself like form fitting, and find the current male styles to be in many ways sloppy looking. I prefer fitting shirts, and good fitting pants, or leggings, or when I can skirt. The skirt can be loose or tight, I like them both.

When I have to wear pants ( which is most of the time right now) I wear jeans. I have thin legs and I always hated the way men's jeans fit on me. Just recently, I've discovered women's jeans that have a much snugger fit thru the leg and rear. Also they have a bit of spandex in the weave that makes them extremely comfortable.

Well, since i discovered Skirtcafe, i haven't worn them, but there was always, in jeans, the compromise between comfort and style. If they were good looking, they were more snug and perhaps inhibiting of movement, or baggy and horrible. The skirts have solved all that. Jack.
