:?:   Seriously, though, it is a great leap in tolerance, especially after the shooting of a gay student which was reported a few months ago. Personally, however, I tend to agree with the Republican, that it is a bit silly- but then I'm an old fart and set in my ways. I'd rather see a real girl up there :P

I don't have time for a well thought-out response (I know I'm going to get in trouble for it, but....), so here are some random thoughts:

1. My kids' high school has both a homecoming queen and king.

2. I hadn't realized that colleges had Homecoming (football) games. I thought it was only for High School. If my college had a Homecoming game/weekend, it went right over my head. But then, I never attended sporting events.

3. I always figured the idea of a Homecoming Queen arose from the strict division of sex-roles at the time. When I was growing up, football was God (as it still is in many parts of the country) and every boy either did his damnedest to become a football star or else was assumed to be gay (only they used a different word.) Since girls couldn't possibly play footbal, cheerleading and being Homecoming Queen were the only outlets for girls who wanted similar adoration. (Academic achievement was, of course, only for those contemptable nerds, and was seen as both un-masculine and un-feminine.)

4. The fact that a drag queen could become Homecoming Queen, and that even the Republican club could consider it merely "silly" is an indication of how irrelevant the idea has become in that part of the country. Fairvax, VA, is in the Washington, DC area and so is, of course, not really part of Virginia or the South. I doubt if things would have played out the same way in Georga or Texas, or even other parts of Virginia: Richmond or, say, Lexington

For the benefit of those of us living east of the mid-Atlantic Ridge, please could someone explain what all of this 'homecoming' lark is all about? I assume it's something to do with the end of the summer term at university (perhaps after receiving exam results?). Here, most students simply seem to celebrate with a night out on the town or having party with their mates, before going off to their homes elsewhere in the country and leaving the city here sadly rather quiet.

Drag queens are part of gay culture, and are not really relevant to fashion freedom for men (whether straight or gay). Interesting article, and I'm all for an end to homophobia, the sooner the better.

But I'm closing the thread because that is just not what SkirtCafe is about.
