The independent mind.
I'll well guess that our Scots contingent has either had its fill of the Robert Burns festivities or cannot get enough, but in this: Scots celebrate bard's birthday (from the Beeb), the wonderful quote of "[... T]he man of independent mind looks and laughs at all that" bounds from the electronic page with such vigour that it captivates the heart.
Of course Burns was referring to things more lofty than mere blokes "shoving both legs down one pipe", but it still rings true and lovely. For what can be better than being "of independent mind"? From that point of view, everything we hold dear in the modern world springs: without it, we'd not have the "basics" we take for granted -- like running water, electricity, and that wonderful 19th Century invention: instant messaging!
So, what does "the independent mind" have to do with blokes in skirts? Quite a bit, I'd posit. As a bunch, men who have the fortitude to venture forth into the world with "one pipe 'round the nether regions" have the guts to ask, "Why not?!" (Please forgive the "interro-bang" there, but there's nothing else up to the task at the moment.) We have that "independent mind". I love it!

"Independent mind" it's a nice turn of phrase and something I'm trying to live up to. Unfortunately my mind often seems to go blank, independent of my requirements
Have fun,

Re: The independent mind.
Lovely turn of phrase that. Unfortunately, my mind is so independent that, often, it goes into another sphere when I should be concentrating hard on something. This trait seems to have been picked up at school during boring and irrelevant lessons. Now, I think it's called incipient dementia, just ask my S.O:

Hi Sarongman,
I guess we suffer from the same problem.

Re: The independent mind.
I've been accused many times of having an independent mind, usually in an adverse way. By the time I finish explaining why it's not adverse, no one is listening. Ka BONG!!!

Went to a Robbie Burns celibration here in the ''Domain'' park where there is a very fine statue of the great man. Didn't have to be a Skotsman. Lots of very good Scottish music and dancing. Was wearing the denim skirt of course. Many kilts there as you would expect. For the dancing, the tradition seemed to be white dresses for the women and the kilts for the blokes. Young girls were in tartain for Highland fling dancing though. A vary excellent afternoon out in the park. They promise to make it an anual event, on his birthday, it went off so well. Jack.
