something we have to get away from

Post by Pythos »

I know this is an imposibility but something skirts for men have to get away from are pictures of people (usually in kilts), with the item flying up and exposing rear end, or genitals. When some people think of men in skirts, these are the images that immediately pop into their mind.

Type in "men in skirts, or men wearing skirts" and you will see in the pictures section of your browser numerous pictures like this. There is that one that has gone all over the net of the guy in scottish garb sitting with his legs wide open and his jewels clearly visible.

We have got to somehow show that this is not what we want.

Just a rant.

Pythos,

You are absolutely correct that such images are not helpful, but unless you have a way to censor the internet we are just going to have to get used the the fact that we can't control what gets put up.

Although we can't prevent images like that from being circulated we can improve people's initial reaction to men in skirts by spreading the message that most of us are just regular guys (who wish to remain regular guys) wearing skirts and the best form of advocacy is simply to be seen doing it. Joe Public is not as stupid as politicians and the media seem to think. He is perfectly capable of working out that there are exceptions in life and the guys who want to flash their bits will do so whatever they are wearing.

Incidentally, have you done any image searches for "girls in skirts" recently? I'm sure we don't all think of women skirt wearers in the way that the image searches might lead us to believe that others do.

Have fun (and try not to burst a blood vessel),

Ian.

PS I absolutely agree that I'd rather those dodgy men in skirts / kilts images were not out there but once the genie is out of the bottle...

Pythos, correct, as I read it, the statement is, what are WE doing to present a true image of what men in skirts is about?
As I am sure we are all aware of, the images do no good for those willing to see only that, but for those who can count to two or further, I am sure that will not present a big problem. I would say that sort of images are unfortunate for men in skirts, but unnavoidable.

I think that the only way to do anything about imaging of men in skirts is to be out there in force, instead of as here in the Netherlands seems to be the case, most men interested in skirt wearing are too chicken to go out on the streets, or are too affraid to confront their unnabiding wives with their unreasonable forbidding of wearing in public, and some other practical reasons. With the result being that of all the men truthfully interested in wearing skirts as daily clothing, only a handful are out there to be seen. Thus any images shown on the net or elswhere dominate what is seen by joe public. As there are maybe at the most??? only a hundred, if that, men in the Netherlands who on a nearly daily basis publicly wear skirts. That is the real problem, not the excessive images on the net.

But still quite right, those images do not help.
A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.

I believe I also saw the offending photo in a humorous email message. The photo thus scorned showed a pair of kilted (British, I presume) gentlemen (pipers, perhaps?) in what appeared to be military-style uniforms and berets, seated upon a street curb stone, enjoying a couple of bottled beers. The photo showed the lower portion of one man's scrotum dangling below the hem of his kilt, in proud and handsome glory. The version I saw bore the caption "I'll take a beer but keep the nuts." I could not tell if the image had been "photo-shopped", but I would presume it was.

To play devil's advocate, I actually found that photo amusing. For those among us recently so concerned that our collective image was appearing a bit too effeminate, this photo certainly portrayed the kilted in an inarguably masculine light. I would simply offer a word of advice to the easily offended: Lighten up. We are more than our clothing; it doesn't benefit us (collectively) to take everything so seriously, 8)

I once had a teacher who frequently said "Life's too short to take things seriously"

Of course, some things should be taken seriously... but I'm starting to find that he was more right than I thought at the time.
