Fashion above comfort?

Post by Charlie »

There's an article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7416712.stm that links economic cycles to fashion e.g. in good times, hemlines go up (perhaps hemlines going up create the good times! ).

A line that caught my eye was:

"Now the skinny fad is yet again wavering, styles with wider legs are returning. "This summer, the only jeans to be seen in are wide, they are flattering and they will still remain comfortable when your legs have swollen in the heat," says Liz Jones in the Daily Mail. "

So wearing jeans makes your legs hot and they swell. Seems to me the sensible answer is to remove said garment - but I've never been very fashion concious 8) :alien:

DEFINITELY!! Burning, flagrationized legs have never been something I'd wear for fashion's sake. Or any other sake. Including a bottle of sake. :thewave: :thewave: :thewave:
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

In my experience over the past 6 years, skirts are more comfortable about 80-90% of the time, as long as the correct legwear is worn (or not worn - in the case of very hot weather). There have been a few times when I've been able to get away with a lightweight pleated knee-length skirt in winter, as long as I wear heavy wool knee high socks (or kilt hose - pretty much the same thing) and a warm jacket on the upper torso. It's a bit cooler than a wool kilt, of course, but it's still comfortable down to 32 degrees or so. Once you get below freezing, a wool kilt is the only way to go if you're going to be going about normal daily life... In the summer, I don't usually like going without some kind of legwear, so once the temps get above 85, I usually bring out the nylon knee socks. That, with the same aforementioned skirt, will keep my body cool enough to function properly.

The problem I have with that quote is that I do not find, and never have found, jeans even remotely flattering. On anyone.

Your mileage will vary, of course, but I think the whole infatuation with jeans is simply driven by marketing forces. Unfortunately, that infatuation is now global, and the sheeple continue to lap it up slavishly. :(
