Sock rules

Post by Charlie »

Oh no, I'm breaking the sock rules!

Sock fashion advice at http://uk.askmen.com/fashion/fashiontip ... dvice.html
To make sure you’re not sabotaging your style, have a glance at these sock rules and make an effort to rectify any deviant sock tendencies you may have.
That explains why men's socks are, in general, so drab. I match my socks with the colour of my shirts :) Better still, wear a skirt :)

Charlie

Edit.... I added a comment to the 'Real men don't wear' thread

Goodness, gracious me! Me too! When 'I was a lad', lads & lasses always wore sandals in the summer, and always with ankle socks. I wouldn't have been allowed out of the house, otherwise! :?

Frankly, I don't really care about sock "rules"... Since I usually wear a kilt, I'm already "breaking" their rules.

"Different strokes for different folks," as we used to say.

I love the way opaque tights look, but I find them uncomfortable -- they won't stay up all the way, they constrict my sensitive places and encourage unwanted microbes to grow there, and they drag as I walk, a lot like stretchy, too-tight trousers.

I prefer knee socks or over-the-knee socks. (I'd wear thigh-high socks, if I could find a comfortable way to keep them up.)

And, no, I didn't bother to read the "sock rules." No offense, Charlie, but I've yet to read a collection of "fashion tips" I didn't think was stupid.

Try opaque 'hold-up' stockings (in the larger sizes). The majority have a decent sized 'plain' elasticated top, and they're very hard wearing, too. They're more practical than socks and far more practical and healthier to wear than tights. Except in extreme temperatures (below 30F), tights are 'not a good idea' according to many medical sources - for both genders. :(

No offence taken, I think fashion 'rules' deserve to be broken whenever possible, providing it's not illegal. As someone said "Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools". Unfortunately there are a lot of fools out there.

Try Wolford or Aristoc or Levante tights that make you very comfortable - see on mytight.co.uk or tightsplease or figleaves of UKtights -- I usual Wolford Fatal 50, 50 deiner tights which is so softy and very comfortable so you can find this on Wolford London online... I dont find tights uncomfortable as I find it very comfortable that what I usual wear all time - you need to shave your leg by using Veet Cream with Bladeless that I used -- it so smooth on my legs - I dont wear socks only tights mostly

Real MEN don't wear PLAID!

Post by Since1982 »

Of course they do. Most tartans are a version of plaid, any real man in a Scottish style kilt is wearing a plaid tartan. Even though there are hundreds of different tartans for various clans and/or families, they all seem to still be a version of plaid wool material.

Thanks for that Charlie. It makes good sense.
My thoughts when I first saw the title "Sock rules" was "Oh no, not more rules to add to the Tie and Trouser (tyranny) rules and all the rules on kilt design, wear and accessories etc."
Generally if you feel comfortable in something and it looks OK to you in the mirror, then it is likely to be OK. If you are partly colour blind like me, then a member of the family or friend can give an honest opinion on whether colours match. People who feel uncomfortable or lack self confidence are less likely to look right than those who look comfortable and self confident, so lift your head and look the world in the eye and they won't notice your socks.
Colin.

Yeah, I guess I would be breaking one of her "cardinal rules", since kilt hose can be fairly fuzzy...
