That's a very positive article. I would hope that would encourage a few guys to drop into the shop and try on a kilt. Good feedback from the guys who already wear them. Kilt wearing seems to be taking off in the USA more so than in the UK. That's my impression anyhow.

Nice find, Jan. It always amazes me how people can come up such odd thoughts about kilts. The article quotes a woman asking if the kilts include underwear. Now, I assume she has seen skirts for sale in women's department stores and wouldn't give underwear a thought. Why would a kilt be any different? People just don't think.

Actually, the reporter Nick Miroff seems to have the same one track mind influenced by the store's owner. The kilts sold are mentioned as "all designed on the premise that man is a prisoner in his own underwear." Well, that is one way to wear them certainly but it also can be merely a look someone is after. Maybe I am wrong. Dare I ask if all men want to do is run around without underwear and the kilt is only a means to an end? Kilts look to good to be merely purposeful.

First time I wore a kilt in public I was terrified -- I could see why guys needed an excuse like a wedding or something to try it out. It feels like not just your legs but your whole character is laid out in the open for inspection or rejection and it's scary.

For me it was purely a change, and opening myself up to a totally different feeling.

In one family I know of, where I feel comfortable to go in a skirt, there's a teenage daughter who always razzes me as I walk in, "Nice SKIRT!" The younger daughter then chimes in, "oooh, he's in a man skirt!"

But her mum always greets me with a glass of wine and says, "Just ignore them!" They're a great family and I'm glad they're seeing something new. They always look really thoughtful, and you can see why the first reaction of people is sometimes to laugh, because it seems so strange. Kids just don't bother to hide it, which is healthy.

When they think about it, though, they can't really find anything wrong, and they realise the person in the skirt is just a little different than they thought he was, but they also think, well, we like him, our mum likes him, he's nice, so what is the problem?

And just why do I mention this, apropos nothing? Oh, who knows!?

The meanders a thread takes just make it better, Iain. You know, I think you have given an example of why a man in a skirt is less threatening when he has a woman on his arm. It is an indicator that he already passes muster with somebody whereas a guy alone- who knows what kind of madman he might be.

Not that an assessment of one person in a skirt passing the sanity check helps much. It is the nature of stereotypes to be pernicious and deeply rooted. For instance my aged grandmother clings to the hideous belief that black people are different in many bad ways from white people. Never mind that the only black people she knows are perfectly good people, it never will alter her mental image of black people in general.

Oh, you're definitely right, there. I don't know exactly why -- maybe it's a fragile Y chromosome -- but a lot of guys who go off the rails exhibit one common trend: they go places alone and seem to be afraid of socialising.

There are some women in my life who I really like the company of; being with them is fun because we accept each other. That acceptance takes away a whole layer of effort and makes just being alive a very rewarding experience.

Is anyone here on facebook? Would be neat to link up -- it might be surprising to find out who-knows-who else in the MIS world!

I live close to Manassas and the store. I'll stop by and check it out. Also, on Sept 15 is the Virginia Scottish Games, so a perfect time to pick up a kilt.
