Skirt Length Question

Post by dvs101 »

I'm going to purchase a Macabi skirt and I was wondering what you all thought about the length. I measure 37 inches from waist to floor. The regular length skirt is 35 in and the short length is 31 or 32 in. Which length should I get? The 35 will probably be higher than 2 inches from the ground right when wearing it right?

Hello dvs101,

I live south of you and get to Eureka and Arcata almost every week.

I used to have the long Macabi in plum (or whatever color that was).
I liked the length.
My co-workers had varying opinions "looks like a diaper!" - when pulled up like shorts, "it's a skirt! " - which, of course, it was.

Anyway, I liked the length. I got a compliment and question from a lady at C.R. a couple of years ago... she wanted to know if I was Buddhist (she is Indian as in from India).
We had a nice chat and she told me about men who wear the dhoti in her country.

Now, contrast that with the lady from your town!

My first foray wearing this skirt all-the-way-down was in the Safeway in Arcata.
I thought I was safe there... but... an older woman stopped me cold and asked, "Are you trying to look like a girl!!?". At the time, I had a rather full beard... go figure?
When I tried to explain the Macabi to her, she interupted and remarked, "Well you look ridiculous!".
She shocked me so much all I could come back with was, "You look ridiculous in pants!"

That was when I learned there were TWO Arcatas. :D

I eventually got rid of my Macabi, but I wouldn't mind getting another someday... perhaps a different color.

Enjoy yours.

p.s. I like the longer lengths in skirts anytime they extend beyond my knee and the long Macabi was just fine... no stepping on it other than walking up stairs.

I read over your post again...

Like I said above, I prefer an ankle length if the skirt goes beyond my knees, so the 35 would be my preferred length.
I'm 6'2" and my inseam is probably around 36-37? Can't remember right now.

You could just go to Fabric Temptations, grab a bolt of cloth that is 35" wide and hang it from where you would normally wear your skirt.
This might help give you a better picture of wearing a skirt that length than just hanging a tape measure down to your feet.

You could have responded cheerily with "Are you trying to look like one? If so, you'll never pull it off with all those bags under your eyes and chin."

heh...
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Back to the plot. Get the shorter one, I'd say.

Well, a whole lot of this question depends on what our correspondent wants do do whilst wearing his Macabi. If he's going to be hopping around on rocks, adventurer style, he'd be better off with either a shorter basic length or to have the thing hitched up. If he's going to be walking around on manicured footpaths (or around town), the longer one might be better suited. Furthermore, it depends on his own sense of style.

Managing a long skirt in rough terrain (think stairs but several dozen times worse) will be a chore -- and if the terrain is slippery or otherwise hazardous that makes it all the worse. Sometimes (gasp!) tr*users (or shorts) can be an advantage. However, if the millieu will be forgiving underfoot then there's no reason whatsoever to not do without the inseam.

Dvs -- what's your personal preference for skirt lengths? That'll be the biggest deciding point of all (Macabis can be hitched up very easily according to the doco I've seen on 'em; 'tis a pity the colours are all so drab).
