Skirt Store

Post by skirtlover »

I found a link about a TV news in Netherlands. There is a place where they make skirts for men. Does anyone know more about this?

Great film! Good skirt styles - very masculine.

I hope this catches on, it's very encouraging!!

Hi,

Since I seem to make a small guest appearance (the one in the brown pull and the jeans kilt), I guess I'm morally bound to help with the translation... :-)

When I find some time, I'll put in on my website with a few pictures.

Jan
-----------
Here's a transcript and translation of TV broadcast 'The Club of 100' made by the Dutch television.

url: http://www.clubvan100.nl

The cast:
- Club100, narrator and interviewer
- Pete, the driving force behind 'skirts for men' in Holland
- Manu, skirtwearer from Antwerp, Belgium
- Ellen, assistant to Hans
- Hans Noordstrand, fashion designer (http://www.hansnoordstrand.nl/)
- Jan, yours truly

Club100: Last year, a group of men got together on the website of 'the club of 100' to promote skirts for men.
We reported about it on TV.

Jan: Trousers chafe between the legs, it's hot, it's sweaty. A skirt gives a fresh breeze where it's really needed.

Club100: Pete, from The Hague, demonstrated that there's very little choice in men's skirts in the shops.
The men in skirts did an urgent appeal:

Pete: I would like that fashion designers and stores would introduce skirts for men. That skirts for men
would be produced so that we have more choice.

Club100: Ellen Bakker from Drachten saw the appeal, and she agreed with it.

Ellen: We, as women, can wear anything we like. Whatever I wear, no one stares at me. I found that the
men in skirts have a point.

Club100: Ellen contacted Hans Noordstrand, a fashion designer from Friesland. According to Hans, Holland is
nearly ready for the men's skirt.

Hans: According to my feeling, we're at the edge. One more drop and the bucket flows over. I really have this
feeling and don't often miss.

Club100: For his new winter-collection, Hans Noordstrand has designed a couple of skirts for men. Today
Pete and Manu are coming to try them out and to give their opinion.

Hans: This one has recently been showed at the fashion show. I got some inspiration from 'fishermen'.
You can also put on boots.

Pete: Boots? It's that like a travestite?

Ellen: No, you'll see!

Pete (wearing the black skirt): I feel really at home, just like in a new house!

Club100: What makes a skirt a good men's skirt?

Manu: It should fit the waist. Men have a different waist-hip ratio than women.

Club100: Do you think it makes a difference that a skirt looks masculine?

Pete: Yes, of course!

Club100: But it stays a 'skirt', so people continue to find it strange?

Pete: Not if you wear it like this. It's almost a kilt, and that's almost accepted.

Club100: Do you still wear trousers or a skirt?

Hans: Well, some time ago I went to a birthday party of a very good friend. He asked: 'f you come, can
you wear your skirt then?'. No problem, I said, it's my pleasure.

Club100: Can you put your skirt on for me?

Hans: Now I have to laugh. You know that I stand here on hot coals...

Club100: You're not ashamed?

Hans: Of course not. (come back in skirt) I like to wear it, it gives a good feeling. A feeling of
freedom.

Club100: Now you're are wearing a kilt. Why?

Hans: Well, one has a certain 'position' in the fashion world. So one does not have to shock people and
not to do extreme things.

Club100: Do you feel yourself masculine or feminine in a skirt?

Manu: Absolutely masculine. I don't refer with anything to the feminine.

Club100: You are not a travestite?

Manu: Absolutely not!

Club100: What makes the difference between you and a travestite?

Manu: A travestite wants to behave and feel feminine. And I don't.

Hans: I only see a men's body in front of me. How does he look best? How can I create a good trend?
And there's nothing feminine associated with it.

Pete: I think that if men see that this design looks good, then maybe they will also try.
A lot of men are hiding in the closet, they don't dare.

Club100: So, men in Holland, get out of your closet and put on a skirt.

Once it finally played, it looked interesting. It shows this is an international phenomenon.

The Dutch language is a little strange though. I mean, take this quote from that same web page:

U kunt ook een gratis Vodcast-abonnement nemen via de iTunes Store

which might be excellent technical advice, or a drunken rant.

Sounds good to me!

Wish we had a few famous clothes designers in the UK who could respond to the demand for decent skirts for men. It only take a couple of big names - and then the whole thing is suddenly the latest trend!
It's never too late to have a happy childhood . . .

I don't know how to understand Dutch, although I've been in Dutch a few times over the years, but whatever they mean, those first 2 words look suspiciously gender discriminatory. "u kunt.....:naughty: :shake: :shifty:
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Iain,
"U kunt.." means 'You can', where 'U' is the polite form. (2nd person singular, polite addres)
It's the same as 'vous' in French, 'Nin' in Chinese or 'Usted' in Spanish. It is gender-neutral, it can refer to both male as female.

In other words, go to the i-tunes store and subscribe to their service!
Dutch (never say Dutch, sounds too much like Deutsch *German* to the Dutch) - Nederlandse - is a fantastic language. All the Dutch speak English better than the English, which is the main reason to go and learn Dutch!!
Alstublieft!

Lighten up. I was being facetious. I was sure it wasn't anything to do with the English language slur slang word for a noisy, overbearing woman.

Eh?:eh: I've searched through this thread, and even I can't find that one! :shake:

None of our Dutch friends will 'allow' us to learn Nederlandse. They say it's far easier to speak English! Which they do, as you infer, with consumate ease! I sincerely hope the blokes there take up skirt-wearing as much as their womenfolk appear to be doing in recent years. Back in the 80s, it was rare to see skirts on anyone! I've seen a couple of blokes wearing long skirts (and a fair few Kilts!) in the Amsterdam area, but that's all. I've only worn a skirt there once, across the river in Noord Amsterdam. The only reaction I got was whan a car load of lads pulled up alongside, said, "You must be English!", and drove off!
