Hopeless situation ever to be out in a skirt
Ok, I come from a small Eastern European country in which men in skirt is associated only with homosexuality and transvestism.Whenever a man (heterosexual) is out in a skirt is socially pressurized and abused even by women (they don't even know that wear pants and other accessories for just 50 years, while men have worn skirts for 10,000) as gay and freak. So it is quite impossible to be accepted here. I prefer skirts (because are more comfortable for the testicles and healthier) and other non traditional clothes and shoes for men (fashion freedom, everyone should be equal, but is not for now). I have long beard and work out often, got nothing to do with femininity. That's my opinion-thanx for reading.
There is nothing worse than double standard!
That may be true of that society in general, but for individuals it doesn't hold true. I had a girlfriend for three years from Georgia, Russia, and she lived in Ukraine. She explained there are perhaps 80 eligible men for every 100 eligible women, and of those 80 men, perhaps 5 or more might be gay.
As a result, there are thousands of attractive, well-educated young women in parts of Eastern Europe who know they will grow old without a partner.
So, of the gay men, "Can you imagine how we hate them?" she said. Well, anyway, I always wore a kilt around the house with her and one day she realised how much she liked it, and said, "Oh, you know, how I like it! It's really something!"
So the public perception may be a bit behind the West, but the individuals are quick to catch up. There's nothing stopping your partner accepting it--and if not, there will be dozens of other partners to choose from.

My girlfriend accepts me and even likes me and says that I look like a roman soldier. The problem is that I cannot go outside without being harrassed and called gay, it comes even to physical threats. No difference if I am out with her or alone-the same offense and sometmes she gets offended by the narrowminded people outside.

Same here, nothing but positive feedback.Stu wrote:Viking
You haven't said where you live - in which country.
I have never had a problem in the UK or in Denmark when wearing a skirt. Nobody has ever hassled me or suggested I was gay. It's just not an issue. I reckon most people haven't even noticed.

I live in Bulgaria. If you are a foreigner in a skirt, that woulb be probably ok, anyway you won't understand the obscene words. But for a local that is devastating, narrowmindedness from both men and women. There is no reason not to tell you only the truth, unfortunately the 45 years of communism in the near past are still a big influence on the minds of the people.Women can wear whatever they want to the extremes,though...

i'm afraid narrow mindedness is a trait of the masses. in some parts, people are born "untouchable" and considered no better than animals; social reformers have tried for decades to eradicate this curse without any sign of success. in other parts, like saudi arabia, slavery is routine, and in others, like america or south africa, it has only very recently been abolished.
in the wealthy parts of the world it is assumed that the rest of the planet is only good for being guzzled down their bloated gullets--oil, people, orphans, the entire income of whole countries.. gobbled up by rotund bankers and business men, driving around in their great fat SUVs. or tens of thousands of infants killed by unsafe drinking water, pushed into the abyss by Nestle and their cursed baby milk (breast milk is safe, plentiful, and FREE! an abomination to the board of Nestle. see http://www.scienceandreligion.com/commerce.htm )
there are so many examples of the masses being almost completely immune to quick reform that it would probably be more puzzling if they didn't stare blankly and uncomprehending at every new idea. I feel sorry for our friend in Bulgaria, but the fact that he's got a new idea means there must be others--maybe the solution is some kind of branch of this forum made available in eastern europe!

When it comes to narrow mindedness, I suppose we all have our blind spots.
BTW Ian, I took a peek at the URL you included above (Science & Religion.com). Since the article has nothing to do with either science or religion, I was wondering why it is posted on that website?
Cheers,
Rick

ah, good question from the back!
the website focuses on the intended morality of spiritual principles, and the harmonising effect this has on the brain, and the deviation from morality by a materialist society. the deviation from morality has a corrupting effect on the brain, which renders it unable to see its own behaviour as destructive.

OH! Thanks Ian.

What a shame, but I think globalization will come to your rescue. I know people who are thinking of buying holiday homes in Bulgaria, and mixing broadens the mind. I once visited a country in Europe shortly after the communists left, and yes, I know what you mean - it reminded me of conditions just after WWII. The people were really friendly (I didn't wear a skirt then, though), which is great because lots of them live here now, but the place was unbelievably old-fashioned both physically and socially. If Bulgaria joins the EU, expect things to change fast and best of luck.
