Kilt on a Cruise Ship...

Hi all...

I just got back yesterday from a great 3 day cruise from San Francisco to Vancouver, British Columbia. I wore my khaki Utilikilt a good portion of the time and got quite a few looks! A few smiles but most people were just curious.

Probably one reason is because I've got long hair and they couldn't tell if I was a guy or girl [yes, it's happened before]! One thing I did learn about wearing a kilt while out on deck... be careful in the wind! I went out on deck to take some pictures when all of a sudden, I didn't feel the kilt, just a very cold breeze!

I guess I must've been a 'celebrity' in a sense. On the last night, before disembarking the next morning, I was wearing jeans and this guy and girl in an elevator [some folks I've never seen before] smiled and said, "Hey, where's your kilt?" I just smiled and said, "It's already packed!" As far as I know, I was the only kilted one on board.

Have any of you worn kilts or skirts while on a cruise ship?

No, but I have worn a kilt in high wind - even though I'm quite resistant to cold, I had to put a coat on to pin it down.

I've learned to wear my underkilts with high winds...has prevented overexposure a couple of times. With a dark shirt just looks like a tunic.

Do you count a friends sail boat on the 4th of July? Then yes, I cheated and wore a stars and stripes bikini, disappointed everyone!

Yep.

My wife and I go on a Belly Dance seminar cruise every year - and I'm always in a UTK or a skirt the entire time unless I'm in dance class.

Tried wearing my kilt once while sailing in an old wooden keelboat I had in a force 5 to 6 gale. I hate to think what the people in the conning tower of the sub. doing trials a couple of hundred yards away from me thought! I just carried on trying not to sink. Only worry I had was hoping I didn't rip the kilt whilst bouncing around my boat.

Interesting experience but I don't think I would bother heavy weather sailing in a kilt again. The kilt survived the seawater and the sliding around the cockpit without damage once I had it dry cleaned, but I wouldn't recommend this as a hobby!

On deck, the kilt started blowing around right when I was trying to take some pictures. Ended up just using my hand to hold the kilt down. I didn't even mess up any pics!

Thats a good idea. How about a stars and stripes skirt? I guess it would have to be straight or A-line for the stars and stripes definition to show and not be lost in the folds of a fuller skirt. Good to think about though.

I think you were right Rick, you had become a celebrity. Alternately but not particularly likely, she might just ask that of every man she sees. :p I should start doing that for some interesting reactions.

I sympathise with you Rick. Unfortunately its just an accepted part of kilt wearing here in Scotland, for me. I wear mine a lot in all weathers and even the 8yard kilts get lifted right up when caught by the wind. I made a mistake one day of wearing a 5yard kilt which I bought through the internet from a Scottish reputable kiltmaker and its fine but when I left a multi storey car park in Edinburgh one day to walk half a mile to where I was going, I found it uncontrollable. I always wear navy blue pants(knickers) under my kilts and thats what saved my modesty and also that of all the people who passed me. I did get a few light hearted comments , mainly from women who told me thats why they were wearing trousers but thanking me for revealling my secret!
In windy weather now I wear a 3 quarter length jacket which means the kilt only blows up a bit and doesnt reveal anything except a bit of leg.

I take it that a 5yard kilt is lighter weight than a 8yard kilt? Mine is a Utilikilt [www.utilikilts.com] and is made of cotton... REAL lightweight compared with wool!

Thanks Rick and yes the 5yard has less material and therefore less pleats so while its the same weight of cloth the fact that the pleated part is more open means the wind blows it up a lot more. Its great to wear if you can just accept that the wind will catch it which doesnt really bother me and it's great to wear indoors. I love the swing of the kilt when I walk and its great for that.

The main factor to me is that the open pleat starts at the right part of your hips the the kilt will only blow up as far as that. Strange subject this but nonetheless its all part of kilt wearing.

Ive walked around the decks of the ship late at night wearing the bathrobes the ship provides with bikini underwear, Sometime i let it blow open on purpose, i like the feeling and mabie im a slight exhibitionist. Also im in shape So i dont mind showing off my body. Ive been on 16 cruises since 1998. Taking another in Dec.
