I am not seeing many "Women's Reactions" ! Like many men I wear skirts and feminine tops and especially RHT nylons but I usually get a mixed set of reactions. Many women find it repulsive because of their perception of what they feel a man should be. The other reaction is women who find it fascinating that a man would wear feminine clothing, another is, acceptance and often compliments and or ideas for better fit and styles and makeup ideas etc. Generally positive and supportive. The latter being few! The point should be, How does any of this harm or hurt anyone? It doesn't except maybe the "Wearer". It is just clothes people! Fabrics! not bullets or threats! I am a much more peaceful person when I dress in feminine garb and frankly I love it! I love the women who are kind and helpful about it and I love the women who find it a complete sexual turn on!

My outfit that day was not particularly feminine. Just kind of loud and way-out and fun and somewhat informal.

Same here. I usually err on the side of being more masculine looking than feminine... Just try to do it with clothing that not normally would be considered male clothing.

From the best ofmy recollection, the only responses I've had from women have been unequivocally positive. Here are the best:

1) Oh my god, look at you! I can't believe you actually wore that! You look great! (delivered with a big ear-to-ear smile and a hug)
2) I like your dress! (at a liquor store in Florida by one of the staff, who also asked me about it on another visit when I was wearing pants)
3) Are you from someplace special? (This after being trailled by a senior citizen to my car!) She was genuinely curious and the "punch line" was, "I'm glad somebody has the courage to do something different!"
4) I can't believe how good he looks! (comment to my wife about the rig I wore on Valentine's day from an older woman who, it seems, wanted to do nothing more than pack me up and take me home -- my wife and I laughed for weeks about this)

Those are the ones I remember; I'm sure there have been others, and sniggers, mainly out of ear-shot, but I've not yet had a single overtly negative experience when dealing with the womenfolk.

There have been a couple of instances when I got some negativity from men (boys, mainly, or teenagers) but those were mostly non-issues. It helps being six-foot-four.

I don't do "drag"; there's no point. As I mentioned to my wife at one point, "I'd make for an horrifically bad woman." So, I don't try to "look fem" or "pass"; it'd be a non-starter. That said, I do wear feminine stuff on the lower half (the upper-half stuff just doesn't fit -- I can't "fill it") including heavy tights and even pantyhose for sutff that would look stupid bare-legged (the silk skirts I wear on occasion come to mind), but do so in a way that's quite obviously male. And, from the experiences above, I think it works.

Interesting item on e-bay - appears to be a black watch skirt pleated all round, advertised as a man's skirt. The apparently female seller describes it as a unisex skirt which would also make a great man's skirt in a longer length, which would look very sexy..she says.

i get odd coments form some men when i first meet them but nothing bad.

i still cannot get use to men telling me that a new skirt or dress looks good on me from a girl i just accept the compliment but i am not use to men giving compliments.

Most women here in Scotland I think like to see men wearing kilts nowadays. In my own experience wherever I go its usually a woman of any age who will start a conversation and comment on the kilt. I think the smart appearance of a well coordinated kilt outfit attracts that and it certainly makes me feel good. Comments range from how smart and dateless it is to how nice it is to see men in kilts and I also think women like that little bit of mystery about whats worn underneath, corny as it seems. The young cashier at my local filling station seems to have a different question ready every time I go in which is around 7am and has told me she wishes her boyfriend wore a kilt.

My niece 37yrs is always interested in how I control the kilt, getting in and out of the car, sitting on the train, going up escalators etc. My wife likes me in it but always tells me without fail to remember to keep my knees together when entering or leaving the vehicle! Thats my experience wearing a trad kilt outfit, but Im not sure about the reaction to wearing a skirt as such, Ive never tried that although curiosity is getting the better of me.

A straight skirt or A-line skirt of a plain color and material such as denim, khaki or twill is nearly invisible. You can't run fast wearing one, but keeping your knees together getting in and out of cars happens automatically. That's a straight skirt in my avatar. :)

Actually, you might not get nearly as many comments wearing a skirt as you do with a kilt..:whiteflag

Also where I live, the only time I get comments now after being publically skirted for 14 months, are if I'm wearing trousers. Then it's from men and women, "Where's your skirt today, Skip?" This happens mostly at the Grocery store or Bingo.

It's very interesting forum and also a very nice subject...I don't see very often men wearing kilts(at all) or skirts, so I don't know how it looks in "real life"...I don't know if I approve them or reject...but for sure I know that I admire your couraje of making your point. I saw the pictures of you and I find them very nice. I just pray~pray~ for the future to meet a guy that wears skirts and I could just stay all day long and talk with him about clothes... I'm sure it will be interesting.

Nice of you to say that RedRed and I also could talk all day about my kilt wearing though mine is actually a traditional Scottish kilt so Im not being all that daring. Even so there are still not many men here who wear the kilt on a regular basis. I love it and would be pleased to talk with you anytime about it especially if we met but that probably wont happen depending on where you are!

Thanks very much since1982. I cant run fast in anything now and Ive got well accustomed to maneuvering my kilts.

I get loads of comments mainly from women about it but I enjoy that alot so maybe I should stick with the kilts.

Well... there is some distance between us... I'm from Romania (and not very happy with that). But it's still okay... The internet it's helping me much...I don't have the chance to visit and explore everything that I would like...so searching all day long I found a lot of intersting things and places, newsgroups and forums with great people and great ideeas...

Anyway, here we don't often see man wearing kilts (or skirts) so that's why maby I'm so fascinated about all this...I once had a teacher who was wearing a kilt, and everybody was very interested in this...nobody was laughing or making fun of him...And he was very proud of being one of the man wearing a kilt... A very nice thing...

Sice when men started to wear kilts...?I don't know really at all...Or maby I rather say "What were the train of events that made from wearing the kilts a habit?"

10x for the reply anyway...:cheer:

Men in Kilts

Post by Since1982 »

Red red, men started wearing kilts about 1500 years ago in Scandivanian countries. The Kilt has been Scotland's National costume for about 1000 years. I'ts believed Vikings raided England and all the "then" British Isles, lived in some of the areas they conquered, procreated, and passed on their habits and clothing choices. The Kilt only really took hold in Scotland and Ireland the most, there are a few English Kilt tartans, and a few more Welsh tartans, even more Irish tartans and far far more Scottish tartans. A tartan is the pattern of the plaid color of the kilt. For instance, My heritage is Scottish of the Fraser highland clan. The Fraser hunting kilt tartan is primarily blue with dark red squares and dull white lines crossing themselves. Most all tartans are various combinations of squares, lines and intersecting colors in a plaid pattern. Most traditional kilts are made of wool and are very warm in winter.

In this reply, I am only referring mostly to the modern "Little Kilt" not the ancient original "Great Kilt" as seen in the "Rob Roy" and "Braveheart" movies. :)

When you're surfing the web, type "tartans" into a search engine like Google or Ask.com and you will see all the various plaids that are in use.

More recently there has been a large push for kilts for non-celtic/british/hibernian countries men. Check out Tom's links page for links to non-traditional kiltmakers and traditional kiltmakers as well as skirts for men links.

Kilts and/or skirts for men are far far more comfortable than trousers. With trousers you have your "package" either on the left side of the crotch, the right side of the crotch or sitting right on top of the crotch. In either case, you can get testicular cancer, penile cancer or other cancers of that area from having your "package" sliced into vertically by a fabric edged knifelike crotch. Wearing trousers (unless they are very loose) also cuts down on your semen flow and its procreatability. So the men of the first 10,000,000,000(humans have been on the planet for 10 billion years and animal skins wrapped around the middle qualify as skirts) years before the invention of pants by the Romans so they could comfortably ride horses, (I don't have a horse or a motorcycle, so don't need trousers) had comfortable clothes in the Western world as well as those men in the Eastern world and the Pacific Rim countries that have never stopped wearing MUGs (M.U.G. means Male Unbifurcated Garments, or one tube for 2 legs instead of 2 tubes for 2 legs).

I hope this helps you, Red Red...~pray~ ~pray~ :D

REDRED

Since1982 has given you a very good historical account of the kilt

I think it worth mentioning also that a kilt as we know it today has been well adapted for modern day wear. It used to be that it was a long length of plaid which was basically wrapped around the person.

If you want to PM me I will be happy to reply with my own experiences of kiltwearing here in Scotland. as I dont want to bore all these good members with more of my ramblings/

I can't comment on wearing skirts in public - I'm still working on that. However, when I purchase skirts at thrift stores, I always get interesting comments. My favorite was "I bet you can't wait to try that on," which a cashier told me as she folded up a long, crinkle broomstick skirt for me. I should have conversed with her, but instead just smiled.

I noticed that they usually hold up the skirt and then look at me. However, it is generally something nice like, "you have great taste in skirts."
