Was there a similar requirement for women to wear long hair?
When I was in high school, WAAAY back when, long hair was forbidden in wood shop class.
It could get into power saws and drill presses. Once(in 2004), a plumber with very long hair,
came to my house to run an auger snake through my drain. His long hair got caught in the
snake part and almost pulled his head into the moving parts. I had to get scissors to cut
him loose from the machine once it stopped.

Don't recall mention of womens hair.

I don't recall a reason or rational being offered for restricting the length of a man's hair. So I suspect that this was simply an attempt to shove men back into the Man Box/Man Coffin.

Thinking back to the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, longer hair on men came to be tolerated. More or less. Emphasis on the word "tolerated." Longer hair may not have been fully accepted by some. I would say that longer hair did not become conventional. So subject to back lash.

A warning to keep in mind regarding non-conventional examples of self expression, such as MIS, nail polish, diverse jewelry, etc. I suspect that many will see these as effeminate, and seek to use the legal system to stop it.

I missed this earlier Grok!
Regardless of whatever the motivation is, the "legal" system has been used/exploited to serve the aims of those in control around the world.
Make no mistake, all forms of diversity are easy prey to those for whom conformity and acquiescence are desirable.
Freedom is a rare and precious commodity, use it wisely and guard it fiercely.

When I first met Mrs Mouse, when she was a Miss, her hair was short. She is the child of a missionary family in the Plymouth Brethren denomination, so as a missionary man's daughter, her hair had to be long. So gaining her independence, she cut her hair and wore it short for many years until she met me, a long hair lover..... She grew her hair for me, but hated it, so it is now short and has been for most of our marriage. I was a good husband and cut off her long platted hair for her, before she went off and got it styled short.
I found this which gives the reason it was mandated for her https://plymouthbrethren.org/article/4808
A Woman's Hair.

By Franklin Ferguson
A serious thing is the cutting and shingling of a woman’s hair, that which God declares is her glory (1 Cor. 11:15), and was given her for a covering (verse 15), and as the sign of her husband’s authority (verse 10, see Scofield Bible). Of course the worldly woman is determined not to follow Bible ideas, and laughs at the very thought of restricting the cutting of her hair. But shall a Christian woman, knowing that to have short hair is a shame to her (1 Cor. 11:6), and knowing why the long hair was given her by God; shall she go and have it cut? To put aside the Word of God so that she may follow the ways of the world which “lieth in the evil one” (1 John 5:19, R.V.), is a serious offence, though some may have acted without sufficient thought of wrong.
In drawing the attention of Christian sisters to this thing, it is not done in a carping spirit; but because the teaching of Scripture is as clear thereon as can be, and because so little attention is given to it in public ministry. Many transgress for lack of knowledge, and this shows the need for wise and gracious exposition of the Word by elder brethren that may prevent sheep and lambs of the flock being shorn; and may lead in instances where the hair has already been cut, to it being let to grow again. All truth is to be ministered in its due season, without partiality, in view of the Judgment Seat of Christ.
Let all concerned “suffer the word of exhortation” (Heb. 13:22), and not thrust aside what may feel disagreeable. Did we but realise what is the present trend of things in the world, as God sees, how careful would we be to show our obedience to His holy will in all things!
I would imaging that there are other denominations and religions with similar restrictions on hair.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

Organised religion makes rules.
Rules demand conformity.
Non conformity equals non faith.
Not showing faith may take the power of law.
The price of a skirt, should you choose?

Ah, but Jim the rule of non conformity is simply contrary to one of conformity.

Why would they want to use the legal system to stop it provided that it is not harming anyone and is not illegal? It doesn’t make any sense to me!

The answer is simple, it was cited those with long hair was trouble makers and to be able to tell who was male and female. This was some of the reasons that was used during the Hippie movement, my generation. The U.S. Supreme court ruled in favor of these false lies in 1972, and never been overturn.
Any search on the internet will bring up these facts about long hair during the Hippie movement.
