Whilst in Venice on Monday a male in his late 20’s / early 30’s walked past me wearing an ankle length woollen brown/grey skirt with a long mid thigh coat and Trilby style hat. I saw he was wearing striped socks and boots. He was the only male during my 8 day visit who I saw wearing anything remotely feminine.

It was very much men in male clothes and women in jeans or occasionally in shorts/ short skirts and black tights. The occasional satin skirt or dress. So very much a male/ female divide.

But beside that we have a very big culture of not taking to strangers, no comments, compliments or even small talk, even with your neighbours. Of course people loose their inhibitions when they drink and they say the nasty things they think and just excuse it the day after with a laugh and "I was so drunk" and expect it to be forgiven.
I will say that this whole "slow to warm up" tendency is culturally ingrained enough that even as a 3rd generation Swedish American (my great grandfather immigrated here in the late 1800s), I'm also that way.

Ive been on only one in the restaurant in a skirt of dress.
I dont care anymore I'm not going to put pants on unless I have to for some reason.

I expected to see more men wearing styles not regularly seen in the uk. One young man was wearing very flared light weight trousers, which i love and have some very bright flared trousers myself, but I expected to see more styles.

I am not sure any European country is any different. Even in Scotland, you see very few men in any form of skirt. The only places you see lots of men in skirted garments are those cities with many eastern influence populations.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

I’ve seen more in France and maybe expected to see a similar number in Italy, but didn’t
