Thobe

Post by skirted84 »

My new unbifurcated garment is known as a thobe. More commonly used by Arab men for religious events or in Arab countries. Mine is cotton/linen and light blue. Very comfortable in the privacy of my home and would be in warm weather.

To wear publicly is more of a minefield. Mainly in terms of cultural sensitivity, although we don't get precious about non scots wearing the kilt. Also many would not take kindly to describing them as a "dress" like the kilt is a skirt or not. Also it is usually worn over regular clothes not just with underwear beneath.

Why would be my first question. I see many of these in London, especially on Fridays. There is usually a hat that goes with it and a beard. I suspect if you were to wear it out, you would get asked questions which may be more difficult to answer than what clan are you from. That is if you could understand the language the question was being asked in.

In a more fun angle, I do smile when you see a normal set of trousers, socks and shoes peeping out the bottom of such a garment. The other point to mention is that me, a guy in a skirt, is not much to write home about, considering the number of other men in these types of dresses.

IMHO, I would stay indoors and enjoy it. Buy whatever normal skirt or dress you like, to go out, would be my advice.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

Would you go into a Rangers Social club rigged out in shamrocks and emerald green?
Would you go into a Gorbals pub shouting that guys in kilts are all a bunch of pansies in skirts?
Yes, do you have a death wish?

Very very different things, and you have always impressed me by being level headed!

If you want a 'dress' for men, medieval tunics are a good option, they were worn in Europe by native people for hundreds of years, and they do not have a direct 'religious group' association. Just avoid designs that resemble a cassock (Christian religious robe / dress). There's loads of information available online about how to make a T-tunic, and they can be bought from re-enactment and LARP suppliers.

As others have said, I'd stay well clear of throbes, and also kurtas (an Indian garment), as they are an immediate tie to certain religious groups and cultures.

My dear departed wife ABSOLUTELY forbidden me from getting a thobe. It was OK with her for me to wear a dress unless she went with me out in public.
