Looked at several different images of the Hopi "kilt"; appears to be a simple wrap skirt. More of a Hopi sarong.

I have to wonder if MIS in these different cultures meant one, or at most, a few traditional designs.

I agree, Grok, it's a wrap with a belt/tie. Anthropologically it'd be a skirt or an apron. I wonder about the origins of calling it a kilt?

In the Western world outside of Great Britain, any skirt worn by a man is often incorrectly called a kilt. People just can't get it through their heads that most clothing is gender-neutral.
