Hamilton Kilts (Amazon)

I recently bought two cheap acrylic kilts of Amazon, from a storefront called "Hamilton Kilts". I thought I'd just share a brief word or two, once I've worn them in I'll come back for a more proper review. I'm sure the links will go to the Amazon Sweden, but search hamilton kilts and they should show up.

I was a bit apprehensive, considering that they are about 35€ each and the store is located(thus shipped from) the UK. I did not have to pay anything extra to get them through customs, which I was glad for, but shipping was about 20€.

They had surprisingly good reviews and all the bad ones seemed to be size related from people that ordered their standard trouser size. The reseller did contact me prior to shipping to confirm the size I had ordered so thats another plus.

I have been looking around at the very cheap segment, trying to find something suitable for everyday casual wear - just to get out skirted more since my wife does not approve of my more prefered styles of skirts, main point is getting rid of that inseam afterall, so just get some that she does accept for everyday wear right? Happy wife, happy life and all.

I got one in Gray(I could'nt find a name for the tartan, but I'm sure it has one) and one in Blackwatch. I have a cheap one(Also about 35€) in the more standard royal stewart tartan since before(but its only about 2m of fabric at the hem, so its really a wrap skirt and not a kilt, but if it gets them sold to men right? ) that I'm comparing to.

I did measure the hem, and it clocks in close enough to 5yd that its probably my conversion thats off. They are true to size, and are adjustable to 2" larger, I thought it would be 1" either way, if I order more from them I will pick the next size down for a more snug fit, but these fit as they should at the smallest holes. The material is a medium weight acrylic wool(i was dreading that they might be printed polyester). I can't complain about the sewing, its done well, even the shipping stiches to hold down the pleats were done very well and took a bit of effort to get out. The buckles seem to be of decent quality and should hold up well.

I'll see if I can get some decent pictures up of me wearing them later on, today its pouring down so its both wet and dark.

The waist fit and garment shape would harmonise better with a male figure even with less fabric, vs other skirts, because that's what they were designed for. Less fabric would be less hot in summer, but would impact how the garment moves.

I also have an Amazon kilt where the pleats are just not right too. Means that I just don't wear it and it is just taking up space in my wardrobe.

I found it curious when in the US to find that pleating to the stripe was so common. In the UK, pleating to the sett is widespread in ordinary use, and pleating to the stripe is usually the mark of a military kilt.

(I don't like the horizontal strips resulting from pleating to the stripe, and a kilt maker I once asked said she preferred the challenge of pleating accurately to the sett.)

The pictures of the kilt on Amazon showed pleating to the stripe. But the actual kilt the came had some pseudo pleating to the sett.

The first kilt I bought was a costume kilt from the tourist shops in Edinburgh over 10 years ago. Back then I didn't know anything about kilts and only now I learned it's pleating was just to a fixed width, like a women's pleated skirt. I still wear it out because where I'm from nobody knows about kilts.

You will find that whatever skirt you wear, some people will assume it is a kilt. I wore a grey SkirtCrafts unisex skirt to a job and the client thought it was a kilt, when he asked me about it.

I went to a local coffee stall in a plain mini skirt, and it took me a while to work out why someone started talking about bagpipes! (It was incessant comments about bagpipes, clans, and cold knees that helped to drive me to wear more non-tartan skirts in the first place.)

Looks good except they are the usual 24inch drop which is too long for me. May as well wear an over the knee skirt.
