UFOs
Re: UFOs
You've reminded me that, as a kid in probably the 70's, we used to drive through Todmorden on our way to Yorkshire for holidays and there was something looking like a "space ship" parked there. By the wonder of Google, there's even an article about it in The Guardian! https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesig ... i-suuronen

The Kelly-Hopkinsville case.

Re: UFOs
Now that's not true. With only a little bit more technology it would be possible to build generation ships that could colonise the galaxy in a million years or so. Given the time frames, distance and evolution, that means that in a million years the galaxy will be full of aliens, and they will be descended from us.

Re: UFOs
What technology is that? How do you go faster than light - which you will need to? The energy required to bend space-time is estimated* to be colossal.
* I don’t deny that there may be a way of bending space and time without vast amounts of energy, but there’s no sign of that as yet. Star Trek is not real.
The last point is that earth-like planets are vanishingly rare. We are incredibly lucky to be on a planet that’s just where it is. I just wish we took better care of it.
I would love to believe aliens are flying about, teasing us with pics, but I am not convinced.

You don't go faster than light, that's the point. At 0.05c it would take 2 million years to reach the other end of the galaxy. That's a long time, but there's no technological limitations.
You're right about the planets though, it's likely in the future most humans will be living in space.
If you can build a self-sufficient space station, you can build a generation ship. They did the math. Similarly, no aliens are going to be visiting us. If they arrive, it's because they intend to stay.

Re: UFOs
As an avid reader of science fiction, I must say I'm disappointed at the negative attitude towards impossible physics challenges. Sure - today we think these things and today we have no solutions - but I'm a firm believer in ignoring reality and hoping that someone comes up with a solution to these problems. In my lifetime? Probably not, unfortunately. One can dream.
Re: UFOs
Who’s to say that we know everything about physics or that the laws as we understand them actually apply elsewhere (as in some place so far away we can’t even imagine the distance)?
The problem with scientists is that if it can’t be proven it doesn’t exist.
An open mind is essential.
By the way, I don’t at all like science fiction.
