New to the cafe, a bit about myself.

Post by Kevino19 »

Hi everyone and thank you for letting me register.
I'm in my 50s a genetic male and I'm quite a big build with a 38 to 40 inch waist. I live in England and have since the age of eight years old had an interest in wanting to wear skirts. I wouldn't say I'm trans, but I would like to see a world where men are able to wear skirts on the streets and not be ridiculed. I'm still pretty much in the closet and usually only wear skirts at home and places of work where I am on my own. I suppose what I'm looking for is any sort of encouragement or tips as to what sort of skirts to wear which looks masculine, also some much needed style tips.
Also I'm looking forward to being on forums answering questions and also chatting to other people who have similar interests. There's no hate or prejudice here from myself, people can be who on earth they want to be as long as they dont harm other people.

Hi Kevino19

Welcome to the cafe. I also live in England in Cambridge and work most of the time in London.

This was me a few years ago, then I found this place, turned 50 and decided to let the inner ME out, which dated from when I was 6!!!

I am now 61 and totally free to wear whatever I like 24/7 and the only restriction is what is inside my head. I tone down my skirts for work and don't go too crazy when I am out with Mrs Mouse. But I do not wear trousers any more and live my life in a skirt.

There are members here who wear a skirt/kilt a few times a year to people like me who live in a skirt. Choice is the aim of the site for each man to find his own happy spot in life.

This sounds a very familiar story to me and probably many others on here.

Likewise, it takes much confidence to be openly out in public. This forum has been a great help to me on this one although at present it is still fairly rare for me to do so.

Couldn't agree more.

Hola,

I think you've come to the right place. As you spend time on the board you will find scads of discussion around the issues you've raised, and many more delights and fun along the way. I am another one who lives in a skirt daily regardless of much else; though I was 'introduced' to skirts by my wife about 50 years ago, I was still conforming in bifurcated pants most of the time for many years. Though I was wearing skirts fulltime before I stumbled onto this site, I have added to both my confidence and gained a bunch of pragmatic additions from the wisdom of the members here; so hang in, read, share, learn and enjoy.

You'll get lots of tips on how to gently enter the public venue in skirts, but in short -- my take is you've got to "own" your choices and proceed with the confidence that you are fully entitled to your choice. Typically, the only impediment is the fear in our own heads; and sometimes S.O's -- lots on that here too.

I’m in my 50’s and a genetic male too. I am also big guy. You will find the forum very inspirational. I wear skirts or dresses nearly every day of the week when I’m out in public shopping or going for walks. I wear leggings or tights depending on my mood and I create my own style.

So far I’ve had no issues dressing in skirts, dresses and tights in public apart from some confused comments I have overheard behind my back or startled reactions from some people passing by but they are a minority as the majority of people just walk past without batting an eyelid.
My name is Arty. I’m a guy with a passion for wearing skirts, dresses and tights and a hobbiest musician and artist. 8)

Thank you to all who have posted on my thread, it's great to know that there are people who I am the same as. It shouldn't be an issue in this day and age to be who you want to be but I need confidence to be able to be my true self, it will come in time I hope.

If you post a few more times on any thread, you will be promoted to a full member and able to see more of the cafe. One area that will open up is the pictures area, where some members post quite often what they are wearing. For me it is inspirational what other men are wearing around the world and helps me with my confidence to walk out the front door.

Welcome to the cafe Kevino19,
As others have stated you will find a lot of support and advice from other members. Most of us have had to deal with the same issues you mention and I certainly value the encouragement and help I’ve received from being a member. I now wear a skirt virtually every day - just have the confidence to go for it - most of the angst is in your own head. Most people you meet or pass by either don’t notice or if they do it simply doesn’t bother them. After a while you also realise it is no big deal and you begin to appreciate all the positives of skirt wearing.

Welcome Kevino19.
Good place for encouragement.
I wear a skirt or a kilt all the time at home or out and about at large. I get more positive comments than negative ones. I say thanks for the positive and ignore the negative.
All I can say is go for it you will love the feel and the freedom.

People are far more preoccupoed with their own lives to be bothered. How many people can we place from a day out? When you head out in your chosen outfit, you can attract attention by being more flambouyant or wear the simplest skirt which will barely raise an eyebrow.

Fact is though, especially here in the UK, nobody bats an eye.

It's great fun to wear a skirt out and not because its taboo. They are just a fun items of clothes to wear.

Hi Kevino19,

Welcome to the Café! I'm another UK man in his 50s, and like others replying before me, I rarely wear trousers. Skirts are so much more comfortable and varied.

Start where most guys start, with a kilt or a denim skirt. A kilt needn't be tartan: there are plain cotton or denim ones to be had much more cheaply. A denim skirt could be knee-length or the same length as your shorts. That has the advantage of being a relatively small change from what you might wear already. Leave the floaty boho floral maxi until you are ready for it!

One day when you're in a skirt at home and need to nip out for a pint of milk or something, take your courage in both hands and go outside without getting changed. It's not easy at first; go to somewhere other than your local corner shop if you don't want to be spotted by anyone you know. Your heart may be going 19 to the dozen, but it gets easier each time. And once you are calm enough to notice people's reactions, you'll see that they don't care what you wear. People will notice, but most just think "Why not, if he wants to", and almost nobody will say anything to you about it. Shops are good places because the only person you're likely to have any interaction with - at the checkout - isn't allowed to say anything unpleasant to the customers. You might be lucky and get a compliment! I got one a few weeks ago in a shop, and I was wearing an ankle-length polo neck jumper dress.
Keep on skirting,

Alastair

My own view of skirt wearing for men is to be yourself. There's a problem here becuse you may have been keeping your true self under wraps for your whole life due to expectations. This brings in a whole new aspect as you attempt to be the inner self that has been so long under a weight.
It's confusing and you are not alone. A lot of MIS say they just want to wear skirts for comfort reasons. They are comfortable! But there's generally a bit more to it than that. I'm not saying we are all gay or trans or whatever. I am saying that humans are a spectum of male and female and society fixates (especially for men) on one or another.
Here's what i'm doing: i'm trying to look good in whatever I wear, i take advice here and from those closest to me and i slowly incease my knowledge about what works and slowly push the envelope. Essentially i want what is best for and MIS everywhere. That we might together alter expectations.
