Hello Josie24, welcome to the Cafe. I think the UK, at the moment, is pretty safe for the skirted man. Which part of the UK are you in?

Re: Skirts in foreign lands
Lands are only foreign if you don't live there, so I don't know if this counts, but I have lived in or on Madeira for about six weeks now. I have worn a skirt or a dress (yes, a dress) all but three days. We have a lovely little apartment five minutes or less from the promenade, which serves as a beach. We walk there regularly. My partner I think is a bit nervous about what she thinks is the attention that I draw from how I dress but I seldom notice and continue to remind her that I don't care. As a matter of fact, I have gotten more positive comments from other people than I ever did in the same amount of time in the States. The area has several luxurious high-end hotels and guest houses, so I see and am seen by many tourists. I have seen two other skirted males during my time here, both tourists, I'm sure. A woman working at the car rental office exclaimed that she loved the way that I dress

Modoc,
Sounds like a very useful report based on a goodly amount of exposure, so precisely the kind of reassurance some of us need. Thank you.

Hi Guys,
I’m over the moon to be able to say I’ve just returned home from La Palma (Canary Islands) and everyday I was there on holiday with my wife I wore skirts , I was in heaven, I didn’t get a single negative comment from anyone, I noticed a couple of fellow holidaymakers stare for a few seconds but not a single comment not even from the hotel staff.

Always happy when wearing a skirt.

Nice to hear. That's mostly what my experience has been here in Madeira where I have worn a skirt just about every day of the 6 months that I have been here. But I must admit that some of the local working guys make it obvious that they are not fans. But as I have said many times, I don't expect everyone to like how I dress. I am just glad not to have to suffer any discernable consequences.Paul wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 12:02 am Hi Guys,

Well done, both of you! Keep on taking your skirts everywhere!
6 months in Madeira would be lovely. Beautiful scenery, the climate is great, and there seemed to be plenty going on in Funchal the times Hazel and I were there. Have you retired there?

This is the most recent post that mentions skirted travel to Malta. Has anyone been there since July 2024?skirtedlondoner wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 7:48 am Europe seems to be pretty chill with skirts on men. London, Paris, Malta, Spain. All good. No issues. Would avoid it in most of Poland though!![]()
I’m due for a week’s holiday there with my wife towards the end of November this year, and want to do it 100% skirted.

I would think that Malta would be fine because it is a Christian Country. In my opinion, you would need to be careful in Muslim countries because they would think that you are a gay-homosexual and possibly stone you to death. I would never wear a skirt in a Muslim country unless I had a death wish.familyman34 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 03, 2025 5:57 pmThis is the most recent post that mentions skirted travel to Malta. I doubt religion has a part in it, Malta is part of Europe, we generally know how to separate religion from culture/society. I don't think there would be any problems within Europe.jamie001 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 05, 2025 4:32 pm I would think that Malta would be fine because it is a Christian Country. I've never been to a Muslim country (in fact the only country I've been to outside Europe is USA) so I can't speak for that, but the Muslims living here don't seem to mind for whatever that is worth.
I would hazard a guess that the problem isn't the religion, but rather the lack of democracy and absence of separation between church and state.
That's a wee bit of topic though.

Has anyone wore a skirt over in Poland? I’m heading over there next weekend for a city break in Krakow and wondering if I could potentially get away with wearing a skirt there.

Re: Skirts in foreign lands
I truly wish those posting here would speak from experience and not from their own suspicions, prejudice or bias about wearing skirts in other lands.
I do not know about Poland first hand, but I believe there were some public demonstrations there where men were wearing skirts in support of women's rights. That might be considered a "sanctioned" event -- but it is suggestive of tolerance. I have worn skirts in quite a few countries on our travels, some mentioned on this site at times, without any untoward responses. I don't generalize that to all countries or circumstances.
However, I don't think we are doing ourselves any good by creating fear and barriers from our ignorance. I also suspect attitudes in any country vary somewhat by the region, setting, event(s) and if the attire would be fitting in the setting if worn by a woman.

Poland, Hungary, and most of Eastern Europe are very conservative countries with traditional family values and gender roles. Be careful. I have been to both Poland and Hungary and decided to wear trousers to be safe. YMMV.

Re: Skirts in foreign lands
I lived in Berlin for two years in my work as a civil engineer and visted Poland many times.
Now back in the UK my kids attend a catholic school where a large proportion of the kids/parents are Polish.
I hope that helps Faldaguy.
I have been to France, Spain, Germany and Switzerland in skirts and no problems. Italy I would be wary about (Coder has been there so would know best). Eastern block countries would be a 80% no for me and Russia and absolute no.

It does. What were your observations when in Poland, and what era -- some hope?Barleymower wrote: ↑Thu Nov 13, 2025 6:14 pmI lived in Berlin for two years in my work as a civil engineer and visted Poland many times.

Catholic schools tend to be quite conservative places, so I'd not bank on the parents there being representative, but it may well provide some insight too. Hopefully all the speculation on this question as it periodically comes up will be well nuanced. More often than not we let our fears and biases hold us back unnecessarily.
