The state of information on youtube

Post by robehickman »

Currently, there is very little on YouTube offering practical advice around how to choose and style skirts for men, the following is the only one offing 'serious' advice posted recently (and in my opinion, he looks very good):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkXyaCBEPbs

Besides this, there are numerous 'should men wear skirts?' videos going over the history of men wearing skirts, and numerous others mostly with men wearing skirts / dresses in a jovial way.

I think there is a big gap in available information concerning:

- General advice targeting a male audience on what kinds of skirts exist and their pros / cons.

- The practical advantages of skirts.

- Guidelines around skirted silhouettes that work visually and proportionally on a male body (the skirted silhouettes most people are familiar with are based on extrapolation of female hip curves and won't work on most male body shapes).

- Much more diverse styling advice, with regular follow ups, from a larger number of content creators.

- Pointing out that a guy wearing a skirt is going to (in most cases) look like a guy wearing a skirt, due to body shapes of men / women being different.

Maybe this topic doesn't justify long(er) format videos that you typically see on YT? I think that there is extensive coverage on Instagram (and no doubt other "socials") through posts and short videos from the likes of Getting Dressed With Brad, Gender Blender, man_in_skirt_and_heels, Mark Bryan, cjreeve, chris_wears_boots_and_skirts, cdorso, heyy_moosh, jrdplm (Jordan Palmer - frequents this site), newdandy21 (a personal favorite of mine), Chris Hill, enbysam27, jorgeconfalda, the_heads_count, cossy.camille, prostyle1961, romainfashion (another fave of mine), marcdupont543, thebeskirtedman (with separate website), mrtightsguy, ashley_enby, terrysingh.nyc (designer / clothing brand) and many others. By checking these accounts out, it is possible to get some great ideas (across different age groups and body sizes) when it comes to skirt / dress styling for guys.

Not to mention the wealth of information here!
Hell it's overload and filtering is the real issue.

While I completely agree, I also feel it important to have coverage of different platforms as different people use different ones. Getting Dressed With Brad has a lot of good advice on youtube, but could be better targeting common search terms.

The problem with using "common" search terms is that it badly contaminates the output with meaningless drivel entirely unrelated to what was being "searched" for. We have abandoned the concept of an "index" which used to the key to everything. Relying on "search" relegates much on-line stuff to "write-only" status where it will never be found to be accessed.
